Installation Notes

  1. For safety, disconnect the spark plug wires and ensure the engine is in neutral.
  2. Remove the propeller's cotter pin, then unscrew the propeller nut and washer.
  3. Slide the propeller off the propeller shaft. You may need a prop puller if it is tight.
  4. Remove the old, sheared pin from the propeller shaft.
  5. Clean any debris from the propeller shaft and the inside of the propeller hub.
  6. Slide the new propeller onto the shaft, aligning the pinhole.
  7. Insert the new shear pin through the propeller hub and shaft.
  8. Re-install the propeller washer and nut, tightening to the manufacturer's specified torque.
  9. Secure the nut by inserting a new cotter pin and bending its ends.
  10. Reconnect the spark plug wires. It's always a good practice to carry spare pins on board.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this drive pin will fit my motor?

This pin is designed for Johnson and Evinrude 10-25 HP outboards from 1968–1979. Please check the detailed Engine & Model Compatibility table on this page to confirm your specific model and year are listed before purchasing.

What is the function of a propeller shear pin?

A shear pin is a safety device that connects the propeller to the driveshaft. It is designed to break or "shear" if the propeller strikes an underwater object, protecting the more expensive engine gears and drivetrain components from damage.

Why would a shear pin break during normal operation?

Shear pins typically break from impact with a submerged object like a rock, log, or sandbar. They can also fail due to propeller cavitation, an unbalanced propeller, or metal fatigue from age and corrosion. Using an incorrectly sized or rated pin can also cause premature failure.

How can I tell if my shear pin needs replacing?

If your engine runs but the boat doesn't move (or moves very slowly), the shear pin has likely broken. You should visually inspect the pin if you suspect an impact or notice unusual vibration. Always replace a sheared pin; do not reuse it.

Is this aftermarket pin different from the original OEM part?

This part is engineered to meet or exceed original specifications. It is made from high-quality stainless steel, offering enhanced strength and resistance to corrosion compared to some original parts, ensuring reliable performance in marine conditions.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
