Installation Notes
Follow your outboard's service manual for detailed instructions. A general replacement guide is below:
- Disconnect the spark plug wires and shift the engine into neutral.
- Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gear case drain and vent screws to drain the gear lube.
- Remove the bolts connecting the lower unit (gear case) to the engine's upper section.
- Carefully lower and remove the gear case assembly. The driveshaft will disengage from the powerhead.
- Unscrew and remove the water pump housing cover.
- Note the rotational direction of the existing impeller blades before sliding it off the driveshaft. Remove the drive key.
- Clean the housing and wear plate surfaces of any old gasket material or debris.
- Install the new gasket, wear plate, and drive key. Lightly grease the driveshaft.
- Slide the new impeller onto the shaft while turning it in the correct rotational direction (typically clockwise) to seat the blades.
- Apply a thin layer of marine grease or soap to the inside of the pump housing and reinstall it.
- Reattach the gear case to the upper unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are properly aligned.
- Reinstall all bolts, refill the gear case with fresh lube, and reconnect spark plug wires before testing.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I find my engine model to confirm fitment?
Your Johnson or Evinrude model number is usually on a metal plate or sticker on the transom bracket or the engine itself. Match this number against the comprehensive list in the "Engine & Model Compatibility" section.
What are the signs of a bad water pump impeller?
Common symptoms include a weak or nonexistent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alerts or steam from the engine, and a melted or warped water pump housing upon inspection.
How often should I replace the impeller?
As a preventative maintenance item, it is recommended to replace the impeller every 1–2 years or every 100–200 hours of use, depending on operating conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater, sandy/silty waters).
Why is there a range in the dimensions?
The slight variations in dimensions (e.g., 69.0–69.37 mm) reflect minor differences reported across various aftermarket and OEM data sources. The part is engineered to function correctly within this tolerance range.
Can I install this myself?
While many boat owners perform this maintenance task themselves with basic mechanical tools, we recommend professional installation if you are not familiar with outboard lower unit service. An improper installation can lead to severe engine damage from overheating.
Is there a difference in performance compared to an OEM impeller?
This aftermarket impeller is designed and manufactured to meet or exceed OEM specifications for fit, form, and function. It is made from high-quality neoprene and brass, ensuring reliable cooling performance comparable to the original part.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
