Installation Notes

Disconnect the negative battery cable before beginning work.
Remove the lower unit (gearcase) from the outboard motor by unfastening the mounting bolts.
Locate the water pump assembly on top of the lower unit and remove its cover.
Carefully pull the old impeller off the driveshaft, taking note of the original blade orientation.
Clean the inside of the pump housing and inspect the wear plate for scoring or damage. Replace if necessary.
Lightly lubricate the new impeller and the inside of the housing with marine grease.
Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft while turning the shaft clockwise to correctly seat the blades.
Reassemble the water pump housing, using new gaskets if included in your kit.
Reinstall the lower unit onto the outboard, ensuring the driveshaft and shift shaft align properly.
Once fully assembled, reconnect the battery and test the engine in water to confirm a strong tell-tale stream.

How do I know if my impeller needs replacing?

Common signs of a failing impeller include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, an engine temperature alarm, or visible cracks and brittleness on the impeller blades during inspection. We recommend preventative replacement every 1–2 boating seasons.

Can I reuse the old gaskets?

It is strongly recommended to use new gaskets when servicing the water pump to ensure a proper seal and prevent leaks, which could compromise cooling performance.

Do the impeller blades need to be oriented in a specific direction?

Yes. As you install the impeller, turn the driveshaft in its normal direction of rotation (usually clockwise) to bend the blades correctly within the housing. Installing them backwards will result in no water pressure and cause the engine to overheat.

Is this impeller suitable for saltwater use?
