Installation Notes

  3. Place the lower unit on a stable workbench. Locate and unbolt the water pump housing.
  4. Remove the old housing, impeller, and wear plate. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly, removing any old gasket material or sealant.
  5. Lightly lubricate the new housing interior and insert the new impeller. Turn the driveshaft clockwise to help seat the blades.
  6. Install the new key, gaskets, and seals as provided in the kit.
  7. Reassemble the water pump housing and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
  8. Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are correctly aligned. Secure all bolts.
  9. Reconnect the battery, start the engine using a water supply (flushing muffs), and verify water is exiting the tell-tale port.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How often should I replace my water pump impeller?

For preventative maintenance, it's recommended to replace your impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. This can vary based on usage conditions (e.g., sandy or saltwater environments may require more frequent changes).

What are the signs of a failing impeller?

Common symptoms include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, or visible cracks and brittleness on the impeller blades during inspection.

How can I be sure this kit fits my specific engine?

Please use the detailed 'Engine & Model Compatibility' table provided on this page. Cross-reference your engine's model, horsepower, and year range. Also, visually compare the parts in the photos to your old parts before ordering.

Does this service kit include the water pump housing?

This is an impeller service kit and does not include the metal water pump housing. It contains the impeller, key, gaskets, and O-rings needed for a standard replacement. The included notes mention it may work with 5001594/5001595 Water Pump Repair Kits, which typically include the housing.

What kind of lubricant should I use during installation?

Use a marine-grade grease or a simple soap and water solution to lubricate the inside of the water pump housing before inserting the new impeller. This helps prevent damage to the blades during initial startup.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
