Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this impeller fits my engine?

This kit is intended for Johnson/Evinrude 5.5 HP and 6 HP two-stroke outboards from 1954–1979 and 7.5 HP two-stroke outboards from 1954–1958 that use the specified metal water pump housing. Verify your engine’s exact model and year, original part number, and housing style before ordering.

What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?

Common signs include a weak or absent tell-tale stream, overheating, or steam from the exhaust. A worn impeller may also show cracking, brittleness, deformation, or missing blades.

How often should I replace my impeller?

Inspect the impeller regularly and replace it when it shows wear or as part of scheduled preventative maintenance. Service intervals should be shortened when the engine is operated in saltwater or sandy or silty water.

What tools are needed for installation?

You will typically need a socket or wrench set, screwdrivers, a gasket scraper or plastic blade, and suitable marine grease. Refer to the engine service manual for model-specific tools and torque specifications.

Does this kit include the metal pump housing?

No. The kit includes the rubber impeller, housing gasket, and drive shaft key. It is designed for installation in your existing compatible metal pump housing.

What is the difference between this and an OEM part?

This is an aftermarket replacement, not an OEM component. It is designed to provide the specified fit, form, and function for the listed applications.

Is this an OEM part?

No. This listing is for an aftermarket replacement kit. The OEM and aftermarket reference numbers shown above are provided for application and cross-reference purposes.
