Product Details
This water pump impeller kit with housing is an aftermarket replacement assembly for selected Johnson and Evinrude V4 and V6 hydraulic-shift, two-stroke outboard engines from approximately 1976–1978. It is installed in the lower unit and replaces the impeller, pump housing, wear surfaces, gaskets, seals, and related hardware needed to service the water pump.
Replacing the complete pump assembly can help restore water-pump performance when the impeller, cup, plate, housing, or sealing surfaces are worn. Confirm the engine model, year, shift type, and original part number before ordering.
- Water pump service kit with housing and related components.
- Designed for selected Johnson/Evinrude V4 and V6 hydraulic-shift outboards.
- Installs in the outboard lower unit.
- Includes a half-moon-style impeller key for the applicable pump design.

Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery and place the outboard in neutral.
- Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gearcase drain and fill screws to drain the lubricant.
- Remove the fasteners securing the lower unit to the upper leg, then carefully lower and detach the gearcase.
- Remove the old water-pump housing to expose the impeller, wear plate, and related seals.
- Clean the mounting surfaces, driveshaft, water-pump cavity, and water-tube area. Remove old gasket material and debris.
- Install the new wear plate and gasket, fit the impeller key, install the impeller, and fit the housing, seals, and O-rings in the correct order.
- Tighten the housing fasteners according to the engine manufacturer's service specifications.
- Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring that the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are correctly aligned.
- Refill the gearcase with the correct marine gear lubricant and specified quantity.
- Run the engine only with an appropriate water supply, such as flushing muffs, and confirm a steady tell-tale stream before normal operation.
Use the manufacturer's service manual for torque values, lubricant specifications, shift-linkage procedures, and model-specific disassembly instructions.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm whether this kit fits my engine?
Check the complete engine model number, year, horsepower, stroke, shift type, and original water-pump part number. This kit is intended for selected Johnson/Evinrude V4 and V6 two-stroke hydraulic-shift applications from approximately 1976–1978. Do not rely on horsepower alone.
What are the signs of a failing water pump?
Common symptoms include a weak or absent tell-tale stream, an overheating warning, excessive engine temperature, or steam near the exhaust. Stop the engine if overheating occurs and investigate the cooling system before further operation.
How often should the impeller be replaced?
Inspect the impeller during regular maintenance and replace it when the vanes are damaged, permanently set, cracked, or hardened. Replacement intervals depend on operating hours, storage conditions, and exposure to saltwater, sand, or silt.
Is this kit for mechanical, electric, or hydraulic shifting?
This application is for the specified hydraulic-shift gearcases. It is not confirmed for electric-shift or standard mechanical-shift gearcases unless the complete model and original pump references match.
Why replace the housing instead of only the impeller?
The pump housing, cup, and wear plate can develop scoring or wear over time. Replacing these parts together with the impeller helps restore the sealing and contact surfaces needed for efficient water-pump operation.
Is this an OEM part?
No. This is an aftermarket replacement kit intended to correspond to the listed application and reference numbers. It is not manufactured or supplied by Johnson or Evinrude.
