Product Details

This lower unit seal kit is designed for selected Johnson/Evinrude outboards using the small gearcase. It is intended for 2-cylinder loopcharged 40–60 HP models and 3-cylinder loopcharged 60–75 HP models from 1975 through 1988.

The kit provides the seals, gaskets, O-rings, and washers needed for a lower-unit or gearcase resealing service. It is an aftermarket replacement for applications cross-referenced to OMC part number 0396355.

  • For Johnson/Evinrude small-housing gearcases.
  • Supports standard lower-unit resealing and gearcase service work.
  • Includes sealing components for applicable driveshaft, propeller-shaft, shift-housing, water-pump, and drain/fill areas.
  • Professional installation is recommended because gearcase disassembly, seal removal, and reassembly require suitable tools and service procedures.

Part Number Matrix

Use the following references to compare the kit with the number shown on your existing part or service documentation. Cross-references do not replace confirmation of the engine's gearcase type.

Brand Part Number Reference Type
OMC / Johnson/Evinrude 0396355 OEM reference
Sierra 18-2659 Aftermarket lower unit seal kit reference
GLM 87603 Aftermarket gearcase seal kit reference

Engine & Model Compatibility

Compatibility depends on the complete engine configuration and gearcase housing. Keep the horsepower, cylinder configuration, model year, and housing type together when checking fitment.

Brand Engine Configuration Rated HP Stroke Years Gearcase OEM Reference
Johnson/Evinrude 2-cylinder loopcharged 40–60 HP 2-Stroke 1975–1988 Small housing 0396355
Johnson/Evinrude 3-cylinder loopcharged 60–75 HP 2-Stroke 1975–1988 Small housing 0396355

Important: This listing is not confirmed for 35 HP models, large-housing gearcases, or later 40–50 HP small-housing applications unless the engine's specific model information and existing part reference confirm the match.

What's in the Box

One complete lower unit seal kit containing the application-specific sealing components required for the compatible small gearcase, including applicable:

  • Oil seals
  • Gearcase and water-pump gaskets
  • Shift-housing sealing components
  • O-rings and related sealing rings
  • Drain/fill plug washers

Component styles and quantities are application-specific. Compare the kit contents with the original gearcase configuration before installation.

Installation Notes

  1. Verify the engine model, year, horsepower, cylinder configuration, and small-housing gearcase before beginning work.
  2. Secure the outboard or lower unit safely and place a suitable drain pan beneath the gearcase.
  3. Remove the vent and drain screws and drain the gear lubricant according to the manufacturer's service procedure.
  4. Disconnect the shift linkage as required and remove the fasteners securing the lower unit to the exhaust housing.
  5. Remove the gearcase and disassemble the water-pump, bearing-carrier, shift-housing, and related components as required for access.
  6. Use appropriate seal-removal tools to remove the old seals, gaskets, O-rings, and washers without damaging sealing surfaces.
  7. Clean all mating and sealing surfaces thoroughly. Remove old gasket material, corrosion, and debris.
  8. Install the replacement components in their correct locations. Apply lubricant to seal lips only where specified by the service procedure.
  9. Reassemble the gearcase using the manufacturer's torque specifications and correct component orientation.
  10. Reinstall the lower unit, reconnect the shift linkage, and refill the gearcase with the specified marine gear lubricant.
  11. Install the drain and vent screws with the supplied replacement washers and check the gearcase for leaks before returning the engine to service.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm whether this kit fits my engine?

Confirm that your Johnson/Evinrude outboard is a 2-cylinder loopcharged 40–60 HP or a 3-cylinder loopcharged 60–75 HP 2-stroke model from 1975–1988 and that it uses the small gearcase. Compare the existing reference with OMC 0396355, Sierra 18-2659, or GLM 87603 where applicable.

Will this kit fit a 35 HP Johnson or Evinrude?

Do not assume compatibility with a 35 HP model. The documented application for this kit begins with the specified 40 HP 2-cylinder loopcharged configuration, so a 35 HP engine requires separate model and gearcase verification.

Will this kit fit a large-housing gearcase?

No. The documented application is for the small housing. Large-housing gearcases use a different application and should not be matched by horsepower alone.

What are common signs that a lower unit needs resealing?

Common signs include milky or cloudy gear lubricant, water contamination, visible oil around the propeller-shaft or driveshaft area, or a recurring low lubricant level. Inspect the gearcase and identify the source of the leak before replacing seals.

Does the kit include every component for every Johnson/Evinrude gearcase?

No. This kit is specific to the documented small-housing application. Confirm the engine configuration and compare the kit contents with the gearcase being serviced before disassembly.

Is this an OEM component?

No. This is an aftermarket replacement kit intended for applications cross-referenced to the listed OEM reference.

Safety & Important Information

  • Verify the complete engine model, year, horsepower, cylinder configuration, and gearcase housing before ordering.
  • Do not use horsepower alone to determine fitment.
  • Do not install this kit in a large-housing gearcase without confirmed application data.
  • Follow the manufacturer's service manual for disassembly, seal installation, torque values, lubricant type, and shift-linkage adjustment.
  • Professional installation is recommended for safe and reliable service.
  • This is an aftermarket replacement, not an OEM component.
