- Carefully pry out the old oil seal from the bearing carrier, taking care not to scratch the housing surfaces.
- Thoroughly clean the seal pocket in the bearing carrier to remove any old sealant or residue.
- Apply a thin coat of 2-4-C with PTFE or marine grease to the outer edge of the new seal.
- Using a seal driver or a socket of the appropriate diameter, press the new seal evenly and squarely into the carrier until it is fully seated.
- Reinstall the bearing carrier, propeller, and refill the gearcase with fresh, high-quality marine gear lube.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this oil seal will fit my engine?
The best way to confirm fitment is to check your original part number against the cross-reference list in the Part Number Matrix. Additionally, review the compatibility tables for your specific engine model, year, and serial number range. When in doubt, compare the dimensions (30mm ID x 43mm OD x 6.3mm) with your old seal.
What are the signs of a failing propeller shaft oil seal?
Common symptoms include milky or creamy-looking gear lube, which indicates water contamination, or a noticeable decline in the gear lube level. You might also find gear lube leaking from the propeller shaft area or see an oily sheen on the water around your drive.
Is this seal for the driveshaft or the propeller shaft?
This is a propeller shaft oil seal, located in the gear housing's bearing carrier behind the propeller.
How often should gear housing seals be replaced?
It's good practice to inspect seals whenever you are servicing the gearcase or propeller. They should be replaced as part of a regular lower unit service (e.g., every 100-300 hours or annually), or immediately if you detect any signs of leakage or water intrusion.
Can I reuse the old seal if it looks okay?
No. Oil seals are single-use components. Removing a seal almost always damages it, even if the damage isn't visible. Always install new seals to ensure a proper, leak-free fit.
What kind of sealant or lubricant should I use?
Apply a light film of marine grease or a suitable sealant to the outer metal surface of the seal before pressing it into the housing. Lubricate the inner lip of the seal with grease to prevent damage during shaft installation.
