Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if my oil seal has failed?
Signs of a failing propeller shaft oil seal include visible oil or gear lube leaking from the propeller area, water found in the gearcase oil during a change (milky appearance), or visible damage/cracking on the seal itself.
Is this seal directional?
Many shaft seals are directional, with a specific side facing the fluid they are designed to retain. Always install the new seal in the same orientation as the original. The "lipped" or "spring" side typically faces the gear oil.
What is the recommended replacement interval?
Propeller shaft seals should be inspected during every service interval (e.g., annually or every 100 hours) and replaced if any signs of wear, damage, or leakage are present. It's also good practice to replace them whenever the gearcase is disassembled for other service.
Can I install this myself?
While DIY installation is possible for those with mechanical experience and the right tools (like a seal puller and driver), we recommend professional installation to prevent damage to the new seal or gearcase housing, which could lead to immediate failure.
Why does the package include two seals?
Some gearcase designs use two seals installed back-to-back on the propeller shaft for added protection against water intrusion and oil leaks. This kit provides the necessary quantity for a complete replacement on such systems.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
