Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the engine cowling.
  2. Shift the outboard into the neutral gear position.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) and carefully separate it from the upper housing.
  4. Unbolt and remove the water pump housing cover to access the impeller.
  5. Slide the old impeller off the driveshaft, being sure to remove the small drive key.
  6. Clean the interior of the pump housing and inspect the wear plate for scoring or damage.
  7. Insert the new drive key into the shaft and slide the new impeller on. Rotate the driveshaft clockwise to help seat the blades correctly inside the housing.
  8. Reinstall the water pump housing, applying a non-permanent sealant to the bolt threads and tightening to the manufacturer's torque specification.
  9. Reattach the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are properly aligned.
  10. Reconnect the battery, supply water to the engine using flushing muffs, and start it to confirm a steady stream of water from the tell-tale outlet.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this impeller fits my specific engine?

First, check our compatibility tables for your engine's brand, model, horsepower, and year. For Force engines, it is essential that you also verify your engine's serial number falls within the range specified in the notes. Comparing the dimensions and photos to your old part is always a reliable final check.

What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?

The most common signs include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or intermittent water stream from the tell-tale (water discharge) outlet, or a high-pitched whining sound from the lower unit. Upon inspection, a worn impeller will often have brittle, cracked, or permanently bent blades.

How often should I replace my impeller?

As a best practice for preventative maintenance, we recommend inspecting the impeller annually and replacing it every 1 to 2 years, or every 100-200 hours of operation. Replacement frequency should be increased if you operate primarily in saltwater or in water with high levels of sand or silt.

Is this a complete water pump kit?

No, this product listing is for the water pump impeller only. It does not include the pump housing, wear plate, gaskets, or seals. These components may be sold separately or as part of a complete water pump repair kit.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
