Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the spark plug wires and secure the propeller.
  2. Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gearcase oil drain/fill screw to drain the oil.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's upper housing.
  4. Carefully lower and separate the gearcase from the driveshaft housing.
  5. Unbolt and remove the water pump housing cover to expose the old impeller.
  6. Remove the old impeller, noting the rotational direction of the vanes. Clean any debris from the housing.
  7. Lightly grease the new impeller and housing interior with marine grease.
  8. Install the new impeller by turning the driveshaft clockwise while pushing down to correctly orient the vanes.
  9. Reinstall the water pump housing and torque its bolts to manufacturer specifications.
  10. Guide the driveshaft back into the engine and reattach the lower unit.
  11. Refill the gearcase with fresh marine gear oil until it seeps from the upper vent hole.
  12. Securely tighten both gear oil screws and test the engine in water to verify proper cooling.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this impeller fits my specific engine model?

The best way is to check the compatibility tables on this page against your engine's model, year, and serial number. If your original part has a number stamped on it, cross-reference it with our Part Number Matrix. When in doubt, contact us with your engine details before ordering.

What are common signs of a failing water pump impeller?

Key symptoms include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or non-existent stream of water from the "telltale" outlet, and in severe cases, steam from the exhaust. Visible damage like cracked, brittle, or missing vanes on the old impeller also indicates failure.

How often should I replace my outboard's impeller?

As a general maintenance rule, it is recommended to replace the water pump impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use, whichever comes first. Usage in saltwater or sandy/silty conditions may require more frequent replacement.

Is this impeller more durable than the original?

This impeller is manufactured to meet or exceed OEM specifications. It features a durable neoprene rubber compound and a center insert that is chemically bonded to the vanes, which provides excellent resistance to tearing and ensures a long service life under normal operating conditions.

Why is there no water coming out of the telltale port after installation?

This could be due to a few issues: 1) The impeller vanes may have been folded in the wrong direction during installation. 2) A blockage (e.g., old impeller debris, mud) may be present in the water passages or telltale tube. 3) The water pump housing or gaskets may not be sealed correctly. Disassemble and inspect your work carefully.

Can I install this impeller myself?

Yes, this is a common DIY maintenance task for those with mechanical experience and the right tools. However, it involves removing the lower unit, which can be heavy and complex. If you are not confident, we recommend professional installation to ensure safety and proper function.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.

Shipping speed & cost?

We ship worldwide quickly—typical transit 5–15 days. Standard shipping is free; expedited options appear at checkout where available.

Warranty & returns?

Covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If issues arise, contact support with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window (unused & in original condition). See our policy page or reach out for instructions.
