Installation Notes

Use the service manual for the exact engine model. The following is a general installation outline and is not a substitute for model-specific service instructions.

1. Disconnect the spark-plug leads and battery, where fitted, to prevent accidental starting.
2. Place the outboard gear shift in neutral.
3. Remove the fasteners securing the lower unit to the engine leg.
4. Carefully separate the lower unit from the driveshaft housing, keeping the driveshaft and water tube aligned.
5. Remove the water-pump housing to expose the old impeller.
6. Remove the old impeller and woodruff key. Clean debris from the housing, plate and shaft.
7. Install the correct key, then slide the new impeller onto the shaft while orienting the blades in the direction of engine rotation.
8. Reinstall the water-pump housing and verify that the gasket and sealing surfaces are correctly positioned.
9. Reattach the lower unit, aligning the driveshaft splines and water tube before tightening the fasteners to the service-manual specification.
10. Reconnect the battery and spark-plug leads. Test the outboard in water and confirm a steady cooling-water stream from the tell-tale outlet.
