Installation Notes
- Disconnect power: Disconnect the battery and place the outboard or drive in neutral, following the manufacturer's service instructions.
- Prepare the gearcase: If required by the service procedure, place a drain pan under the lower unit and drain the gearcase lubricant.
- Remove the lower unit: Remove the fasteners securing the lower unit to the midsection and carefully separate the lower unit.
- Access the pump: Remove the water-pump housing and note the order and orientation of the existing components.
- Clean the surfaces: Remove the old impeller, housing, wear plate, gaskets and seals. Clean the mating surfaces and inspect for scoring, corrosion or distortion.
- Install the kit: Install the new components in the correct order. Lightly lubricate the impeller with a water-compatible lubricant and rotate the driveshaft clockwise while seating the impeller, unless the applicable service manual specifies otherwise.
- Reassemble the pump: Ensure that every gasket and seal is correctly seated, then tighten the housing fasteners to the manufacturer's specifications.
- Reinstall the lower unit: Align the driveshaft, shift shaft and water tube before securing the lower unit.
- Refill and test: Refill the gearcase if it was drained. Run the engine only with an appropriate water supply and check for cooling-water flow, leaks and abnormal temperature.
Consult the factory service manual for the exact disassembly sequence, torque values, lubricant specifications and alignment procedure for your model.
Troubleshooting and FAQ
How do I confirm that this kit fits my engine?
Match the engine or drive model, stroke, horsepower where applicable and complete serial number to the compatibility information. Also compare the removed impeller, housing and wear plate with the components shown in the package list.
What are the signs of a failing water-pump impeller?
Symptoms can include overheating at idle or low speed, weak or absent cooling-water flow, a temperature warning and damaged, brittle or missing impeller vanes. Inspect the complete pump if the impeller has failed, because broken vane pieces can remain in the cooling passages.
How often should the impeller be replaced?
Follow the maintenance interval in the engine or sterndrive service manual. Inspection or replacement may be needed sooner after extended storage or operation in saltwater, sand or silt.
Why replace the housing as well as the impeller?
A scored, warped or heat-damaged housing can reduce pump sealing and water flow even after a new impeller is installed. Replacing the housing and wear plate when inspection shows damage can help restore the intended pump interface.
Is this an OEM part?
This listing describes an aftermarket replacement kit. Mercury, Mariner, MerCruiser, Quicksilver and Sierra names and part numbers are used only to identify compatible or related references where applicable; this product is not represented as a genuine OEM component.
What should I do if the parts do not match?
Do not force-fit the components. Stop installation and compare the engine or drive serial number, original part number, impeller vane design and housing dimensions with the applicable service information.
Safety and Important Information
- Verify the model, serial number, original part and component dimensions before purchase.
- Use the correct service manual and manufacturer torque specifications.
- Never run an outboard without an adequate water supply.
- Inspect the cooling system after installation and stop operation if overheating, leakage or abnormal water flow occurs.
- Professional installation is recommended when lower-unit removal or gearcase service is outside your experience.
