Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and place the outboard in neutral.
  2. Remove the lower unit according to the engine manufacturer’s service procedure.
  3. Place the lower unit on a stable work surface and remove the water-pump housing fasteners.
  4. Lift off the old housing and note the order and orientation of all pump components.
  5. Remove the old impeller, gaskets, faceplate and related seals. Clean the mating surfaces thoroughly.
  6. Install the applicable lower gasket, faceplate and impeller key.
  7. Install the impeller on the driveshaft, orienting the vanes in the correct direction for shaft rotation. Do not force the impeller over the key.
  8. Install the upper gasket and housing over the impeller.
  9. Tighten the housing fasteners using the manufacturer’s specified torque.
  10. Reinstall the lower unit, making sure the water tube and shift shaft are correctly aligned.
  11. Torque the lower-unit mounting fasteners according to the applicable service manual.
  12. Test the engine in an appropriate water supply and confirm a steady tell-tale stream before normal operation.

Use the correct service manual for your exact engine. If you are not familiar with lower-unit removal or water-pump service, professional installation is recommended.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

What are common signs of a failing water pump?

Common symptoms include a weak or missing tell-tale stream, an overheating alarm, steam from the exhaust or an engine that runs hotter than normal. Stop operation if overheating occurs and diagnose the cooling system before continuing.

How often should the impeller be inspected?

Inspect the impeller at the interval specified by the engine manufacturer and whenever the engine shows cooling-system symptoms. Replacement frequency depends on operating hours, storage conditions and exposure to sand, silt or saltwater.

Will this kit fit a BIGFOOT or SeaPro model?

The supplied application information lists selected Mercury 60 HP BIGFOOT and Mercury 40/60 HP SeaPro models. Confirm the exact model, year, serial-number range, gearcase ratio and original part numbers before ordering.

What should I do if the engine still overheats after installation?

Stop the engine and check the impeller-key installation, impeller orientation, gasket placement, housing condition, water-tube alignment and cooling passages. Also verify that the replacement components match the exact water-pump assembly for your engine.

Why might some washers or seals remain after installation?

The listed kit covers multiple engine variations. Some components may not be used on every application. Use the parts diagram for your exact engine rather than installing unused parts by guesswork.

Is this an OEM product?

No. This is an aftermarket replacement kit. The displayed Mercury, Mariner, Quicksilver and Sierra numbers are reference numbers used for application comparison and are not a statement that this kit is manufactured by those brands.

What are the warranty and return terms?

Warranty and return eligibility are governed by the seller’s current store policy and the order terms applicable at checkout. Contact support before returning or installing a part if the supplied components do not match your application.

Safety and Important Information

  • Confirm the exact engine brand, model, year, serial-number range, stroke type, gearcase ratio and original part numbers before ordering.
  • Compare the kit components with the original water-pump assembly and the applicable service-manual diagram.
  • Never operate an outboard with an uncertain cooling-water supply or an overheating warning.
  • This is an aftermarket replacement product, not an OEM component.
  • Professional installation is recommended when lower-unit service experience or the correct torque specifications are unavailable.
