Product Details
This aftermarket water pump impeller is a high-volume, long-vane replacement for select Mercury, Mariner and Force outboards. The impeller is listed for compatible 2-stroke and 4-stroke applications and is intended for standard gearcase water-pump assemblies. Because fitment depends on horsepower, model, year, gearcase design and serial number, compare your engine identification plate and original impeller before ordering.
The primary manufacturer reference is Mercury 47-42038Q02. Catalog cross-references also identify Mercury 47-42038-1 and 47-42038-2, Sierra 18-3062, GLM 89451, and Mallory 9-45309 and 9-45309-10. These numbers are reference listings; always confirm the complete engine and serial-number conditions.
- High-volume, long-vane impeller design.
- Neoprene rubber impeller with a metal hub.
- Designed for standard gearcase water-pump assemblies.
- Aftermarket replacement; not manufactured by Mercury, Mariner or Force.

Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery and follow the outboard manufacturer's service instructions. Place the engine in a safe, supported position.
- Remove the gearcase and disconnect the shift linkage as required by the specific engine model.
- Remove the water-pump housing and note the direction in which the old impeller vanes are bent.
- Remove the old impeller and clean debris, corrosion and old gasket material from the housing, wear plate and cover.
- Inspect the housing, wear plate, drive key or pin and water tube. Replace damaged parts before installation.
- Lubricate the impeller and pump housing with a lubricant approved for marine water-pump components. Do not use petroleum-based grease unless the manufacturer permits it.
- Install the impeller on the driveshaft, orienting the vanes in the normal direction of rotation.
- Reinstall the housing and gasket as required, tightening fasteners to the engine manufacturer's specified torque.
- Reinstall the gearcase and verify proper alignment of the driveshaft, shift shaft and water tube before operating the engine.
- Run the engine only in an appropriate water supply and confirm a steady cooling-water tell-tale stream. Stop immediately if the engine overheats.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm that this impeller fits my engine?
Match the complete manufacturer, model or series, horsepower, stroke, year and serial number to the application information. Also compare the original impeller's outside diameter, inside diameter, vane style and drive-key arrangement. If any detail differs, confirm the application with a qualified marine technician before ordering.
Does the impeller include a key or gasket?
No. This listing contains one impeller only. Keys, washers, gaskets, housings and wear plates are not included.
What are common signs of a worn water-pump impeller?
Symptoms may include overheating at idle or low speed, a weak or missing tell-tale stream, reduced cooling-water flow, brittle rubber, cracked vanes or missing vane pieces. A damaged impeller should be replaced before further operation.
How often should a water-pump impeller be replaced?
Inspect the impeller at least annually and follow the engine manufacturer's maintenance interval. Replacement may be needed sooner when the outboard is used in saltwater, sandy or silty conditions, or after the engine has been stored for an extended period.
Is this an OEM part?
No. This is an aftermarket replacement impeller cross-referenced to the listed manufacturer and aftermarket numbers. Mercury, Mariner and Force are referenced only to identify compatible applications and part numbers.
Safety & Important Information
- Do not rely on horsepower alone to determine fitment.
- Verify the complete serial-number range, gearcase design, dimensions and drive-key arrangement before installation.
- Never operate an outboard without an adequate cooling-water supply.
- Professional installation is recommended when removing or reinstalling the gearcase.
- Stop operation immediately if the engine overheats or the cooling-water tell-tale flow is abnormal.
