Installation Notes
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and shut off the fuel supply.
- Remove the lower unit from the outboard and keep track of all mounting hardware.
- Unbolt and lift the water-pump housing to expose the old impeller. Note the direction of the vanes.
- Remove the old impeller, key, gaskets, and wear plate as applicable to your pump assembly.
- Clean the pump housing and inspect it for scoring, cracks, or corrosion. Replace damaged components before reassembly.
- Lightly lubricate the new impeller with marine grease or soapy water. Do not run the pump dry.
- Install the wear plate and gasket if required, then install the impeller. Rotate the driveshaft clockwise as the impeller enters the housing so the vanes bend in the correct direction.
- Reinstall the key and secure the pump components according to the engine manufacturer’s service procedure.
- Reinstall the water-pump housing and tighten the fasteners to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Reattach the lower unit and test the engine in water. Confirm a strong tell-tale stream and monitor for overheating.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this impeller will fit my engine?
Compare the engine brand, model, horsepower, stroke, and serial-number range with the compatibility table. Also compare the original impeller or service-manual part number with the references in the matrix. If any detail differs, obtain confirmation before ordering or installing.
What are the signs of a failing water-pump impeller?
Common signs include a weak or missing tell-tale stream, overheating warnings or alarms, and steam from the exhaust. A damaged impeller may have brittle, cracked, missing, or permanently deformed vanes.
How often should an outboard impeller be replaced?
Replacement intervals depend on engine use and operating conditions. Many owners inspect the impeller annually and replace it according to the engine manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. Saltwater, sand, silt, long storage, and running dry can shorten service life.
My engine is overheating after replacing the impeller. What else could be wrong?
Inspect the intake screens, pump housing, wear plate, gaskets, key, thermostat, cooling passages, and tell-tale outlet. Also verify that the impeller is installed in the correct direction and that the water pump is not being operated without an adequate water supply.
Is it normal for the impeller blades to be bent?
Yes. The vanes bend inside the pump housing during operation. Replace the impeller if the rubber is brittle, cracked, torn, permanently set, or missing pieces.
Is this an OEM part?
No. This is an aftermarket replacement component. OEM and other manufacturer names and part numbers are provided only to help identify applicable replacements and should be checked against your engine documentation.
How much does shipping cost and how fast is it?
Shipping availability, cost, and delivery estimates depend on destination and are displayed at checkout. Standard and expedited options may vary by location.
What is the warranty and return policy?
Warranty coverage and return eligibility are governed by the applicable seller policy and order terms. Review the current policy before purchase and contact support if an issue occurs.
Safety & Important Information
- Verify the original impeller, dimensions, part number, engine model, stroke, and serial-number range before purchase.
- Do not install the part if the original component or pump assembly differs from the information shown here.
- This is an aftermarket replacement component and is not manufactured by Mercury, Mariner, Suzuki, Sierra, CEF, Mallory, or GLM.
- Follow the engine manufacturer’s service instructions. Professional installation is recommended because incorrect water-pump assembly can cause overheating and engine damage.
