Installation Notes
- Shear off any jagged or rough edges from the damaged skeg to ensure a flat mounting surface.
- Place the SkegGuard onto the existing skeg, ensuring it is seated fully. A minimum of 2-3 inches of original skeg is required.
- Tap the front and rear of the SkegGuard with a rubber mallet to ensure a snug fit.
- Mark the two mounting holes for drilling. Remove the SkegGuard.
- Drill the two marked holes through the skeg using the appropriate drill bit size for the included hardware.
- Apply the included Loctite threadlocker to the bolt threads.
- Position the SkegGuard back onto the skeg, align the holes, and securely fasten the bolts. Do not overtighten.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How much of my original skeg needs to be intact for this to fit?
A minimum of 2 to 3 inches (51-76 mm) of the original skeg must remain to ensure a secure installation.
Can I install this on a bent skeg?
No. The existing skeg must be straightened before installation. The SkegGuard is designed to conform to a straight skeg and will not align properly on a bent one.
Does this replace the entire skeg, or is it a cover?
This is a protective cover that also replaces the lower portion of a damaged skeg. It slides over and bolts through your existing skeg, providing reinforcement and restoring the original profile.
What tools are required for installation?
Installation requires common hand tools, including a drill, drill bit, and a wrench or socket set for the mounting bolts. A rubber mallet is also recommended for tapping the guard into place.
Is drilling required for installation?
Yes, you must drill two holes through your existing skeg to mount the SkegGuard securely using the included self-locking bolts.
Does this design help prevent corrosion?
Yes. The guard is made from 316 marine-grade stainless steel for corrosion resistance and includes a built-in drain hole to prevent water from collecting inside, which helps protect your skeg.
