Product Details
This flexible water pump impeller is an aftermarket replacement component for marine engine raw-water cooling pumps. It is listed as an individual impeller rather than a complete service kit and is associated with pump applications from Jabsco, Johnson, Yanmar, Volvo Penta and Westerbeke.
Reference numbers associated with this replacement include Jabsco 653-0001-P and Johnson 09-810B-1. Always confirm the pump model, original impeller dimensions and drive configuration before ordering.
- Flexible neoprene impeller with a brass insert.
- Six-blade design for marine water-pump applications.
- Slotted shaft pin drive.
- Suitable for raw-water cooling systems when the dimensions and drive match the original part.
Reference Number Matrix
These are reference numbers associated with the product listing. A reference number alone does not confirm fitment for every pump or engine; verify the service-manual specification before installation.
| Brand | Reference Number |
|---|---|
| Jabsco | 653-0001-P |
| Johnson | 09-810B-1 |
| Application references | Jabsco, Johnson, Yanmar, Volvo Penta and Westerbeke marine water-pump applications |
Engine and Pump Compatibility
This impeller is associated with a range of Jabsco and Johnson pumps and with selected Westerbeke and Yanmar marine-engine cooling applications. Engine compatibility can vary by pump model, production year, serial range and shaft configuration.
Before purchase, compare the existing impeller with the specifications below and confirm the required OEM reference in the engine or pump service manual. Do not rely on engine brand or model name alone.
| Application | Verification requirement |
|---|---|
| Jabsco water pumps | Confirm the pump model and the Jabsco reference 653-0001-P. |
| Johnson water pumps | Confirm the pump model and the Johnson reference 09-810B-1. |
| Yanmar, Volvo Penta and Westerbeke applications | Confirm the engine-specific pump reference, impeller dimensions and slotted shaft pin drive before ordering. |

Installation Notes
- Shut off the engine and close the raw-water intake seacock.
- Place an absorbent towel beneath the pump to catch residual water.
- Remove the pump cover plate and retain the fasteners.
- Remove the old impeller with suitable pliers or an impeller puller, taking care not to damage the pump housing.
- Clean the housing and inspect the cover plate, cam, shaft, key or drive pin, and sealing surfaces for wear.
- Lubricate the new impeller with glycerin or another lubricant approved for neoprene impellers. Avoid petroleum-based grease and oil.
- Install the impeller with the blades bent in the pump's direction of rotation.
- Replace the cover gasket or O-ring if required by the pump manufacturer. These items are not supplied with this individual impeller.
- Reinstall the cover, open the seacock, start the engine and check immediately for leaks and proper water flow.
Troubleshooting and FAQ
How do I confirm that this impeller fits my engine?
Check the engine or pump service manual for the required impeller reference. Then compare the original impeller's diameter, width, shaft bore, blade count and slotted shaft pin drive with the specifications on this page. Engine brand or model alone is not sufficient because pump configurations can vary.
What are common signs of a failing impeller?
Typical signs include engine overheating, reduced discharge-water flow, visible cracks, missing or damaged blades, or a hard and brittle rubber surface. Inspect the pump and cooling system if any of these symptoms occur.
How often should a water-pump impeller be replaced?
Replacement intervals depend on the engine manufacturer, operating hours, storage conditions and water quality. Follow the service schedule for your engine or pump, and inspect the impeller regularly.
Why is the new impeller difficult to install?
A close fit is normal for a flexible impeller. Apply a suitable water-soluble lubricant and bend the blades in the direction of pump rotation while inserting the impeller. Do not force an impeller with incorrect dimensions or drive details.
What lubricant should be used?
Use glycerin or another water-soluble lubricant approved for neoprene impellers. Avoid petroleum-based grease and oils because they can damage the rubber.
What if the engine still overheats after replacement?
Check the seacock, intake strainer, hoses, heat exchanger, exhaust discharge, pump cover, cam and housing. Also verify that the impeller is rotating correctly and that no damaged blade fragments are blocking the cooling passages.
Is this an OEM part?
No. This is an aftermarket replacement impeller intended for applications using the listed reference numbers and matching dimensions. It is not manufactured by Jabsco, Johnson, Yanmar, Volvo Penta or Westerbeke.
Safety and Important Information
- Stop the engine and close the raw-water intake before servicing the pump.
- Verify the reference number, dimensions and drive configuration before ordering.
- Inspect the pump housing and sealing surfaces whenever the impeller is replaced.
- Professional installation is recommended when the cooling system or pump condition is uncertain.
