Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery, remove the engine cowling and secure the outboard according to the service manual.
- Place a drain pan under the lower unit. If the lower unit is being removed, drain the gearcase lubricant according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Disconnect the speedometer tube, if fitted, and remove the fasteners securing the lower unit to the engine.
- Carefully lower and remove the lower unit, supporting it so the driveshaft and shift components are not damaged.
- Remove the water pump housing and existing pump components.
- Clean the mating surfaces and remove old gasket material without damaging the sealing surfaces.
- Install the wear plate, gasket, impeller key and impeller. Confirm that the impeller is seated correctly and that the vanes are oriented according to the service manual.
- Install the insert cup, housing, O-rings and remaining hardware. Tighten fasteners to the engine manufacturer’s specified torque.
- Reinstall the lower unit and confirm proper alignment of the driveshaft, shift shaft and water tube.
- Refill the gearcase with the correct marine gear lubricant if it was drained, then check for leaks and verify water flow before normal operation.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if my water pump impeller is failing?
Common symptoms include weak or absent water flow from the telltale, an overheating alarm, rising engine temperature or steam from the exhaust. Stop operation and investigate promptly to help prevent engine damage.
How often should I replace the water pump impeller?
Replacement intervals depend on the engine manufacturer’s schedule and operating conditions. Frequent operation in sand, silt or salt water can shorten service life. Inspect and replace the impeller and damaged related components as required.
My engine overheated. Should I replace only the impeller?
Not necessarily. Inspect the housing, insert cup, wear plate, gaskets and cooling passages as well as the impeller. Heat or debris can damage other pump components, so replace any worn or distorted parts.
Is this an OEM part?
No. This is an aftermarket replacement kit intended for the listed applications. It is not manufactured by Yamaha, Sierra or Mallory.
Do I need special tools?
Basic mechanic’s tools, a torque wrench and a suitable gasket scraper are generally required. Additional alignment or removal tools may be needed depending on the engine. Follow the applicable service manual for procedures and torque values.
How can I confirm fitment?
Compare the reference part number, impeller and housing arrangement, engine model, horsepower, stroke, year and serial range with the original equipment and service information before ordering.
