  1. Disconnect the battery and place the outboard securely in the service position.
  2. Remove the lower unit according to the engine manufacturer’s service procedure.
  3. Remove the water pump housing and lift it from the driveshaft.
  4. Remove the old impeller, key, plates, cartridge parts, gaskets, and O-ring.
  5. Clean the driveshaft, pump cavity, and all mating surfaces thoroughly.
  6. Install the replacement plate, gaskets, cartridge components, and woodruff key in the correct order.
  7. Install the new impeller over the key, rotating the driveshaft in the correct direction so the vanes seat without being damaged.
  8. Install the housing and secure it with the supplied bolts and washers.
  9. Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring correct alignment of the driveshaft and water tube.
  10. Refill the gearcase with the manufacturer-specified marine gear lubricant.
  11. Run the engine with an appropriate water supply and confirm a strong, steady tell-tale stream before normal operation.

Use the Yamaha service manual for model-specific torque values, sealants, lower-unit procedures, and impeller rotation direction. Professional installation is recommended when the required service procedure is unfamiliar.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this kit fits my Yamaha outboard?

Check the complete engine model designation and year against the compatibility table. Do not rely on horsepower alone; model suffix, year, shaft configuration, and serial-range conditions can affect fitment.

What are the signs of a worn water pump impeller?

Typical symptoms include overheating at idle or low speed, a weak or intermittent tell-tale stream, reduced cooling-water flow, or visible damage to the impeller or pump housing.

How often should the impeller be replaced?

Replacement intervals depend on operating hours, storage conditions, and water quality. Inspect the impeller during scheduled water pump service and replace it when the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule or its condition requires.

Can this kit be used in saltwater?

Yes, the listed components are intended for marine water pump service. Flush the cooling system with fresh water after saltwater use and inspect fasteners and mating surfaces for corrosion.

Is this an OEM kit?

This listing is for an aftermarket replacement kit. The referenced Yamaha numbers are manufacturer part-number references used to identify the application; this product is not represented as a Yamaha-branded OEM package.

What should I do if my model is not listed?

Do not purchase based only on horsepower or a visually similar water pump. Compare the complete model and year with the application information or consult a qualified marine technician.

Safety & Important Information

  • Verify the original part, complete engine model, year, and applicable serial-range information before ordering.
  • Use the manufacturer’s service procedure and specified torque values during installation.
  • Never operate the engine without an adequate cooling-water supply.
  • Inspect the pump housing, wear surfaces, water tube, and mating seals during installation; replace damaged related components as needed.
  • This is an aftermarket replacement, not a Yamaha-branded OEM component.
