Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and shift the outboard into neutral.
  2. Remove the propeller and lower-unit bolts, then carefully lower the gearcase to expose the driveshaft and water pump.
  3. Remove the old water-pump housing and note the orientation of the existing components.
  4. Clean the driveshaft, pump surfaces, and mounting areas. Remove old gasket material and debris.
  5. Install the supplied seal, wear plate, gasket, pump cup/liner, and related components in the same order and orientation as the original assembly.
  6. Install the appropriate woodruff key in the driveshaft slot, then slide the impeller onto the shaft. Avoid forcing or folding the vanes against the wrong direction of rotation.
  7. Install the housing, O-ring, grommets, and supplied screws. Tighten the fasteners according to the engine manufacturer’s service instructions.
  8. Guide the water tube into the pump grommet and reinstall the lower unit, ensuring that the driveshaft and shift components are correctly aligned.
  9. Secure the lower unit, reinstall the propeller, and reconnect the battery.
  10. Run the engine using the manufacturer’s approved procedure and confirm a strong, steady cooling-water stream before normal operation.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if the water pump needs service?

Possible signs include a weak or intermittent tell-tale stream, an overheating alarm, steam from the exhaust, or a damaged or deformed impeller found during inspection. Check the complete cooling system rather than assuming the impeller is the only cause.

How often should the impeller be replaced?

Inspect the impeller at the interval specified in the engine service manual. Replacement timing depends on operating hours, storage conditions, and exposure to saltwater, sand, or silt.

What installation mistake should be avoided?

Make sure the correct key is installed before fitting the impeller, and confirm that the impeller vanes are oriented correctly for the direction of rotation. Also verify that the water tube enters the pump grommet during lower-unit reassembly.

Does this kit fit every 35–60 HP Johnson/Evinrude engine?

No. The listed horsepower range alone does not establish fitment. Match the engine brand, model, year, stroke, configuration, and original part number, including the gas-assist-tilt exclusions shown in the compatibility table.

Is this an OEM component?

This listing is for an aftermarket replacement kit. The reference numbers are supplied for application and cross-reference purposes; the kit should not be represented as an original Johnson/Evinrude component.

What should I do if my original parts look different?

Do not force installation. Compare the original housing, impeller, key, fasteners, water-tube connection, and part number with the listed contents and confirm the application in the engine service information before proceeding.

Safety & Important Information

  • Verify the engine model, year, horsepower, stroke, configuration, and original part number before ordering.
  • Disconnect the battery before beginning service and support the lower unit securely.
  • Follow the engine manufacturer’s service manual for torque values, sealants, lubrication, and final testing.
  • Professional installation is recommended if you are not familiar with outboard lower-unit or water-pump service.
