What’s in the Box
- 1 × Prop Shaft Oil Seal
This listing is for one individual seal, not a complete seal set. If your gearcase requires two seals, order the quantity specified by the service manual.
Installation Notes
- Drain the gearcase lubricant completely and secure the lower unit safely before beginning work.
- Remove the propeller, bearing carrier and propeller-shaft assembly according to the applicable service manual.
- Inspect the old seals and note their orientation before removal. Some applications use two seals installed back-to-back.
- Use a seal puller or suitable tool to remove the old seal without scratching the housing.
- Clean the housing bore and propeller shaft, removing old sealant, corrosion and debris.
- Apply a thin layer of suitable marine lubricant to the outer metal edge of the seal and the housing bore if permitted by the service manual.
- Using a seal driver or correctly sized socket, press the seal evenly and squarely into the bore until it is fully seated.
- If a second seal is required, install it in the orientation specified by the service manual.
- Lubricate the sealing lip and shaft surface before reinstalling the shaft to avoid damaging the new seal.
- Reassemble the components in reverse order, replacing gaskets or O-rings as required and tightening fasteners to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Refill the gearcase with the specified lubricant and perform a pressure or leak test before returning the boat to service.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if my prop-shaft seal is failing?
Milky or creamy gear lubricant can indicate water intrusion. Gear oil near the propeller area, visible seal damage or fishing line wrapped around the propeller shaft can also indicate a seal problem.
Why are two seals typically required?
Many marine gearcases use two prop-shaft seals installed back-to-back. The exact arrangement and quantity vary by gearcase, so follow the applicable service manual.
Can I install this seal myself?
Installation is possible for an experienced technician with the correct puller, driver and service information. Incorrect installation can damage the seal or housing and cause water intrusion; professional installation is recommended when the required tools or procedures are unfamiliar.
What is the correct orientation?
Seal orientation varies by gearcase. Do not rely on a generic orientation rule; document the original arrangement and follow the specific service manual for your engine or sterndrive.
Will this fit an engine that is not listed?
Do not assume fitment from brand or horsepower alone. Confirm the OEM reference, model and serial range, propeller-shaft diameter, seal outside diameter and housing-bore dimensions before ordering.
How often should prop-shaft seals be replaced?
There is no universal replacement interval. Inspect the seals during routine lower-unit service and replace them when leakage, water contamination, fishing-line damage or visible deterioration is found.
Is this an OEM part?
This is an aftermarket replacement seal, not an OEM component. OEM and aftermarket reference numbers are provided for identification and cross-reference purposes.
What is included?
One individual prop-shaft oil seal is included. Gaskets, O-rings, lubricant and additional seals are not included unless specifically listed.
Safety & Important Information
- Verify the engine or sterndrive model, year or serial range, reference number and dimensions before purchase.
- Compare the replacement seal with the original part before installation.
- Use the applicable factory or professional service manual for disassembly, seal orientation, torque values and pressure testing.
- This is an aftermarket replacement, not an OEM component.
- Professional installation is recommended when lower-unit service tools or procedures are unfamiliar.
