Installation Notes
- Start by draining the gearcase oil completely. Safely secure the lower unit to work on it.
- Remove the propeller, bearing carrier, and the propshaft assembly according to your service manual.
- Carefully inspect the old seals for wear patterns and note their orientation (lip direction) before removal. Most applications use two seals installed back-to-back.
- Use a seal puller or a flat-head screwdriver to carefully pry out the old seals from the housing bore. Avoid scratching or damaging the housing surface.
- Thoroughly clean the seal housing bore and propshaft, removing any old sealant, corrosion, or debris.
- Apply a thin layer of marine grease or 2-4-C lubricant to the outer metal edge of the new seal and the inside of the housing bore.
- Using a seal driver or a socket with an outer diameter matching the seal's, gently and evenly press the first new seal into the bore until it is fully seated. Ensure it is straight.
- Press the second seal into place, oriented according to your manual's instructions (typically back-to-back with the first).
- Lubricate the inner lip of the seals and the propshaft surface before carefully reinserting the shaft to prevent damage.
- Reassemble all components in reverse order, using new gaskets or O-rings as required. Torque all fasteners to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Refill the gearcase with the correct type and amount of new lubricant, and check for leaks by performing a pressure test before returning to the water.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if my prop shaft seals are failing?
The most common sign is milky, white, or creamy gear lube, which indicates water intrusion. You may also find gear oil leaking from the propeller area or notice fishing line wrapped around the propshaft, which can cut the seal and cause failure.
Why are two seals typically required?
Most marine gearcases use two seals on the propshaft, installed back-to-back. One seal is oriented to keep gear oil in, and the other is oriented to keep water out. Replacing both simultaneously is standard practice for a reliable repair.
Can I install this seal myself?
While DIY installation is possible for those with mechanical experience and the right tools (like a seal puller and driver), it can be complex. Incorrect installation can lead to immediate failure and water damage. Professional installation is recommended to ensure a proper, leak-free fit.
What is the correct orientation for installing these seals?
The seals are typically installed "back-to-back." The inner seal (closest to the gears) has its lip facing inward to hold the oil in. The outer seal has its lip facing outward (toward the propeller) to keep water out. Always consult your specific engine's service manual to confirm the correct orientation.
Will this fit my engine if my model isn't listed?
If your engine model is not explicitly listed, do not purchase. The most reliable way to confirm fitment is by matching your old part's OEM number to one of the numbers in the Part Number Matrix or by verifying the shaft and bore dimensions provided in the Technical Specs.
How often should prop shaft seals be replaced?
There is no fixed replacement interval. Seals should be inspected for leaks during routine annual lower unit service (e.g., water pump replacement) and replaced immediately if you find water in the gear lube or visible damage to the seal.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
