Installation Notes

  1. Review the engine service manual and disconnect the battery and spark plug leads where applicable.
  2. Place a drain pan below the lower unit. Remove the gearcase drain and vent screws and drain the lubricant if required for the service procedure.
  3. Remove the fasteners securing the lower unit to the midsection and carefully lower the gearcase.
  4. Remove the water pump housing assembly and note the orientation and order of all components.
  5. Remove the old impeller, key, gaskets, plates, and seals. Clean the mating surfaces without damaging the sealing areas.
  6. Install the replacement gasket, wear plate, seals, and other applicable components from the kit.
  7. Install the key and impeller. Apply only a suitable lubricant recommended by the engine manufacturer; do not install the impeller dry.
  8. Position the impeller vanes in the correct direction for the engine's normal rotation and install the housing.
  9. Secure the housing using the manufacturer's tightening sequence and torque specifications.
  10. Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring correct driveshaft, shift-shaft, and water-tube alignment.
  11. Refill the gearcase with the specified lubricant and install the drain and vent screws with the appropriate washers.
  12. Run the engine only in an appropriate test tank or with the manufacturer's approved flushing equipment. Confirm cooling-water flow and check for leaks or overheating.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm fitment for my engine?

Compare the engine brand, horsepower, model variant, stroke, year, and complete serial number with the compatibility table. The serial-number condition is especially important because engines with similar horsepower can use different water pump parts.

What are the signs of a worn water pump impeller?

Typical signs include overheating at idle or low speed, a weak or missing tell-tale stream, reduced cooling-water flow, or visibly cracked, stiff, damaged, or missing impeller vanes. Stop operation if the engine overheats.

How often should an outboard impeller be replaced?

Replacement intervals depend on the engine manufacturer's maintenance schedule and operating conditions. Frequent operation in saltwater, sandy water, or silty water can accelerate wear. Inspect and replace the impeller when the service schedule or its condition requires it.

Why does this kit use a stainless-steel housing?

The listed stainless-steel housing is intended to provide a durable pump-body replacement with corrosion resistance. Actual service life depends on water conditions, installation, maintenance, and correct engine fitment.

Is this an OEM part?

No. This listing is for an aftermarket replacement kit. The reference numbers are provided for application and comparison purposes and do not indicate that the kit is manufactured by Mercury, Mariner, or Force.

What should I do if the kit does not match my original parts?

Do not force installation or mix unmatched components. Stop and compare the engine serial number, removed parts, reference numbers, and installation diagram with the supplier or an authorized marine technician.

Safety & Important Information

  • Verify the complete engine application and serial range before ordering.
  • Compare the replacement components with the original parts before installation.
  • Use the engine manufacturer's service manual for torque values, lubricant specifications, and lower-unit procedures.
  • Do not operate an outboard without an adequate water supply for cooling.
  • Professional installation is recommended when lower-unit removal or gearcase service is unfamiliar.
  • This is an aftermarket replacement kit, not an OEM component.
