- Lightly grease the new impeller and the inside of the housing with marine grease.
- Install the new impeller onto the keyed shaft, turning the shaft clockwise to bend the blades into the correct position.
- Reinstall the water pump housing and torque the bolts to manufacturer specifications.
- Reattach the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift rod, and water tube are correctly aligned.
- Once assembled, test the engine using a water source and verify a strong stream from the tell-tale outlet.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if my water pump impeller has failed?
Common signs include a weak or no water stream from the engine's tell-tale port, an engine overheating alarm, or a noticeable decrease in engine performance. A visual inspection will often show cracked, brittle, or worn-down blades.
How often should the impeller be replaced?
For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of use, depending on operating conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater, high-sand environments).
What is the correct rotational direction for the impeller blades during installation?
The blades should be curved in the direction of the driveshaft's normal rotation (typically clockwise for most outboards). Installing them backward can cause premature failure and severely restrict water flow.
Is this part for both saltwater and freshwater use?
Yes, this impeller is constructed from high-quality, corrosion-resistant rubber and metal designed to perform reliably in both saltwater and freshwater environments.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
