- Locate the water pump housing on top of the gearcase. Remove the housing bolts to access the impeller.
- Inspect the old impeller's orientation. Remove it, along with the Woodruff key if present.
- Thoroughly clean the inside of the pump housing and inspect it for scoring or damage.
- Apply a light coat of marine grease to the new impeller and inside the housing. Install the Woodruff key and slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, turning it clockwise to bed the blades correctly.
- Reinstall the pump housing, ensuring a proper seal. Reattach the lower unit and test the cooling system at a safe idle speed.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this impeller fits my specific Johnson or Evinrude model?
This impeller is designed for the 55-75 HP range from 1968–1978. Always verify your engine's year and HP against the compatibility table. For confirmation, check if your existing part number matches any of the cross-reference numbers listed in our Part Number Matrix.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common symptoms include a weak or non-existent "telltale" water stream, engine overheating alarms, and in severe cases, steam from the exhaust. Reduced engine performance can also be a sign.
How often should I replace my impeller?
As a preventative maintenance item, most manufacturers recommend replacing the impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. This interval can be shorter if you operate in sandy or silty water.
Is a brass hub better than a plastic one?
A brass hub generally offers superior durability and resistance to heat and corrosion compared to plastic or rubber hubs. It is less prone to spinning on the driveshaft under high-load conditions, providing a more reliable service life.
Can I install this myself?
While installation is possible for those with mechanical experience, it involves removing the lower unit. We recommend professional installation to ensure all components are sealed and aligned correctly for optimal cooling performance and to prevent engine damage.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
Shipping speed & cost?
We ship worldwide quickly—typical transit 5–15 days. Standard shipping is free; expedited options appear at checkout where available.
