Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery terminals and make sure the engine cannot start accidentally.
- Place the outboard in neutral and remove the lower-unit fasteners. Carefully separate the lower unit from the upper casing.
- Remove the existing water pump components and note the order and orientation of each part.
- Remove the old impeller, gaskets, seals, sleeve, and pump-case panel as applicable. Clean all mating surfaces and remove old gasket material and corrosion.
- Install the replacement pump-case panel and gasket in the correct orientation.
- Fit the new impeller to the driveshaft. Use an appropriate marine-safe lubricant or soapy water as recommended by the engine service information, then install the pump components while turning the driveshaft in the correct direction to seat the vanes.
- Install the replacement sleeve and seal where required for the engine configuration.
- Secure the pump assembly using the manufacturer’s specified tightening sequence and torque values.
- Reinstall the lower unit and confirm that the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are correctly aligned.
- Run the engine in water and verify a steady tell-tale stream before returning the boat to service.
Follow the Suzuki service manual for your exact model and serial-number range. Professional installation is recommended when lower-unit removal or water-pump service is unfamiliar.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this kit fits my motor?
This kit is listed for Suzuki DF70A, DF80A, and DF90A 4-stroke outboards from 2009 onward. Check the engine model, year, serial number, and the existing water-pump reference before ordering. The listed OEM references are 17400-87L00, 17400-87L01, 17400-87L02, 17400-87L03, and 17400-87L04.
Does the kit include the outer water pump housing?
No. This product is a water pump service kit supplied without the outer water pump housing. Verify that your existing housing is serviceable before installation.
What components are included?
The listed contents are a water pump impeller, pump case under panel, pump case panel gasket, water pump case sleeve, and water pump case No. 1 seal. Quantities are one of each listed component.
What are the signs of a failing water pump?
Common symptoms include a weak or missing tell-tale stream, overheating warnings, rising operating temperature, or visible cracking and brittleness in the old impeller vanes. Inspect the housing and mating surfaces as well as the impeller.
How often should the water pump impeller be inspected?
Inspect and replace the impeller according to the maintenance schedule for your exact Suzuki engine. Service may be needed sooner when the motor is used in sandy, silty, weedy, or otherwise contaminated water.
Can I replace only the impeller?
Replacing only the impeller may be possible when the remaining pump components are within specification. A complete service kit is useful when the gasket, seal, sleeve, or pump-case panel shows wear, damage, corrosion, or leakage.
Is this an OEM Suzuki part?
No. This is an aftermarket replacement kit intended for the listed Suzuki applications. Suzuki reference numbers are provided for application and part comparison only.
What lubricant should be used during installation?
Use a marine-safe lubricant or the installation lubricant specified in the engine service information. Do not use products that can attack the impeller rubber, and follow the service manual for initial startup and lubrication requirements.
