Installation Notes
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool completely. Disconnect the boat's battery for safety.
- Locate the existing spark plug wires on the engine. Note the routing of each wire from the ignition coil to the spark plug.
- Replace one wire at a time to avoid mixing up connections. Firmly grip the boot, twist slightly, and pull it straight off the spark plug. Then, disconnect the other end from the ignition coil.
- Lightly apply dielectric grease to the inside of the new wire's boots to improve sealing and prevent corrosion.
- Connect the new wire to the ignition coil and spark plug, ensuring both boots click securely into place. Route the wire as the original was.
- Repeat the process for the second wire. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check for smooth operation.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this wire fits my specific engine model?
This wire is designed for Johnson/Evinrude V4-V6 CROSSFLOW engines from the 1980s and 1990s. The most reliable way to confirm fitment is by matching your old part number to one of the equivalents listed in our Part Number Matrix, such as 582365, 582134, or Sierra 18-8816.
What are the signs of a faulty spark plug wire?
Common symptoms include engine misfires (especially under load), rough idling, difficulty starting, reduced fuel efficiency, or visible damage like cracks, burns, or corrosion on the wire casing or connectors.
How often should marine spark plug wires be replaced?
There is no fixed interval, but it is good practice to inspect them annually for signs of wear, cracking, or corrosion. Many owners replace them every 3–5 years or whenever new spark plugs are installed as part of preventative maintenance.
Why use silicone jacketing instead of a standard rubber wire?
Silicone offers superior resistance to high temperatures found in an engine bay, as well as protection against moisture, salt spray, and oil. This ensures a longer lifespan and more reliable spark delivery in a marine environment.
Is any special tool required for installation?
No special tools are typically needed. The wires can be removed and installed by hand. A spark plug boot puller can be helpful to avoid damaging old, stubborn wires, and applying dielectric grease is recommended.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
