Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery terminals to prevent electrical shorts. Start with the negative (-) terminal, followed by the positive (+).
  2. Locate the existing fuse assembly. It is typically found on or near the engine starter motor.
  3. Carefully remove the nuts securing the main power cables to the fuse assembly's threaded studs.
  4. Unbolt the fuse assembly from its mounting point.
  5. Mount the new fuse assembly in the same location, ensuring it is secure.
  6. Clean the cable terminals before reattaching them to the new fuse studs. Re-secure with the nuts, ensuring a tight connection.
  7. Reconnect the battery, starting with the positive (+) terminal, then the negative (-). Check for proper function.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if my 90 Amp fuse is blown?

A common symptom of a blown fuse is a complete loss of electrical power to the engine's starting system. The engine will not crank or turn over, and you may hear a single click from the starter solenoid. Visually inspect the fuse for a break in the internal metal link.

Where is this fuse typically located on a MerCruiser engine?

This 90 Amp fuse assembly is almost always mounted directly on the starter motor or on a bracket very close to it. It serves as the main protection for the cranking circuit.

My boat has two of these fuses. Why?

On certain engine setups, one fuse is used for the main engine starter circuit, while a second, identical fuse is used to protect the power steering pump motor circuit, especially on models with electric-hydraulic power steering like some Verado applications.

Is there a difference in performance between this aftermarket fuse and the OEM version?

Functionally, there is no difference. Our aftermarket fuse is designed to meet or exceed original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications for amperage rating, materials, and durability. It provides the same level of circuit protection as the original MerCruiser part.

What happens if I use a fuse with a different amperage rating?

Using a fuse with a lower rating will likely result in it blowing unnecessarily under normal cranking loads. Using a fuse with a higher rating is extremely dangerous, as it can fail to protect the circuit, leading to a potential fire or catastrophic damage to the starter or wiring.

What is the purpose of the new 8M0207795 part number?

Mercury/MerCruiser often updates or supersedes part numbers over time due to minor manufacturing changes, supplier updates, or consolidation. The part number 8M0207795 is the current official replacement for the older 79023A91 and 88-79023A91, and it is functionally identical.
