Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and shut off the fuel supply. Place a rag under the carburetor to catch any spilled fuel.
  2. Carefully remove the air silencer/cover and disconnect all fuel lines, throttle linkages, and choke linkages from the carburetor. Note their positions for reassembly.
  3. Unbolt and remove the carburetor from the intake manifold.
  4. Disassemble the carburetor on a clean workbench, taking care to organize all parts. Remove old gaskets, seals, the needle, and seat.
  5. Clean all metal components thoroughly with carburetor cleaner, ensuring all jets and passages are clear of debris. Do not use cleaner on rubber or plastic parts.
  6. Install the new components from the rebuild kit, including gaskets, diaphragms, o-rings, and the needle/seat assembly.
  7. Reassemble the carburetor, ensuring all screws are tightened to the correct torque specifications.
  8. Reinstall the carburetor onto the engine, reconnecting linkages and fuel lines.
  9. Reconnect the battery, turn on the fuel supply, and prime the system. Check for leaks before starting the engine.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if my carburetor needs rebuilding?

Common signs include hard starting, rough idling, stalling, hesitation on acceleration, black smoke from the exhaust, or fuel leaking from the carburetor body. These symptoms suggest that internal components have worn out or passages are clogged.

Does this kit fit both V4 and V6 engines?

Yes, this kit is designed to service a wide range of Johnson and Evinrude V4 (85-140 HP) and V6 (150-235 HP) Crossflow engines within the specified year ranges. Always check the compatibility table to confirm your exact model and year.

Will this kit fix an engine that won't start?

If the starting issue is caused by a faulty carburetor (e.g., clogged pilot jet, incorrect fuel level from a bad needle/seat), this kit can resolve the problem. However, starting issues can also be caused by ignition, compression, or other fuel system problems.

Is any special tool required for installation?

Standard mechanic's tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, sockets) are typically sufficient. A can of carburetor cleaner and a clean workspace are highly recommended. No specialty tools are usually necessary.

How often should a carburetor be rebuilt?

There is no fixed interval. It depends on usage, fuel quality, and storage conditions (especially with ethanol-blended fuels). It's best to rebuild it when performance issues arise. Regular use of a fuel stabilizer can extend the life of the components.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
