Installation Notes

  1. Ensure the engine is off and cool. Disconnect the battery for safety.
  2. Place a rag or container under the fuel line to catch any spillage.
  3. Note the fuel flow direction, indicated by an arrow on the old bulb.
  4. Using pliers, loosen the clamps on the old primer bulb and slide them away from the ends.
  5. Carefully twist and pull the fuel lines off the old bulb's barbs.
  6. Install the new primer bulb, making sure the arrow points in the direction of fuel flow (towards the engine).
  7. Secure the fuel lines onto the new barbs and reposition the clamps to ensure a tight seal.
  8. Squeeze the new bulb several times until it feels firm, which indicates it is filled with fuel.
  9. Check thoroughly for any leaks around the connections.
  10. After confirming there are no leaks, reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check again.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this primer bulb fits my engine?

This bulb is designed for universal application on carbureted marine engines using a 3/8" (10mm) fuel line. Please check your fuel line diameter and cross-reference your OEM part number with our Part Number Matrix. It is not suitable for high-pressure EFI/DFI systems.

What is the correct installation orientation?

The primer bulb must be installed with the molded arrow pointing in the direction of fuel flow. On most boats, fuel flows from the tank towards the engine. Incorrect installation will prevent fuel from reaching the engine.

What are the signs of a failing primer bulb?

Common signs include the bulb becoming hard or brittle, visible cracks, fuel leaks, the bulb not staying firm after pumping, or difficulty starting the engine due to a loss of prime.

How often should I replace my fuel primer bulb?

As a preventative maintenance item, we recommend inspecting it annually and replacing it every 2-3 years, or immediately if you notice any signs of wear, cracking, or leakage. Continuous exposure to sun and ethanol-blended fuels can accelerate aging.

Will this work with ethanol-blend fuels?

Yes, this primer bulb is constructed from NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber), which is compatible with modern gasoline containing up to 15% ethanol (E10, E15).

The bulb won't get firm after pumping. What's wrong?

This can be caused by a few issues: 1) The bulb is installed backward (check the flow arrow). 2) There is an air leak elsewhere in the fuel line or at a connection. 3) The internal check valves are not sealing. 4) The fuel tank pickup is clogged. Ensure all connections are tight and the bulb is oriented correctly.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?
