How do I know if my trim relay is failing?
Common signs of a faulty trim relay include a clicking sound from the relay when the trim switch is pressed but the engine doesn't move, the trim working in one direction but not the other, or the trim motor running continuously. Intermittent operation is also a key symptom.
My trim motor works but only goes down, not up. Is the relay the problem?
This is a classic symptom of a failed relay. Power trim systems use one or two relays to reverse the motor's polarity. If it operates in one direction, the motor is likely fine, but the relay has failed on one side of its internal switch. Replacing the relay usually solves this.
Is this a single relay or do I need two?
This depends on your system. Some older or simpler trim systems use a single relay, while many use a pair of identical relays (one for up, one for down).
