Engine & Model Compatibility

Confirm your engine model and year in the table below. This part fits a wide array of engines, so verifying your specific model is crucial for a correct fit.

For Johnson Models: Check for your specific model prefix and year code (e.g., J40ELCRM for a 1985 40 HP). If your model is from 1989 onwards, it may be listed as "Multiple models" for that year.

For Evinrude Models: Similarly, check your model prefix and year code (e.g., E40ECRM for a 1985 40 HP). Coverage from 1989 onwards is extensive and may be grouped by year.

Installation Notes

  1. Safety First: Disconnect the battery and ensure the engine is cool. Relieve any pressure from the fuel system.
  2. Access the Powerhead: Remove the engine cowling and any components obstructing access to the powerhead mounting bolts.
  3. Remove the Powerhead: Carefully and evenly loosen and remove the bolts securing the powerhead to the adapter plate. Lift the powerhead off the drive shaft housing.
  4. Clean Mating Surfaces: Thoroughly remove all traces of the old gasket material from both the bottom of the powerhead and the top of the adapter plate. Use a plastic scraper and an appropriate solvent to avoid scratching the metal surfaces.
  5. Position New Gasket: Place the new powerhead base gasket onto the adapter plate, ensuring it aligns perfectly with all bolt holes and passages. Do not use sealant unless explicitly required by your engine's service manual.
  6. Reinstall Powerhead: Lower the powerhead back into position. Hand-tighten the bolts, then torque them to the manufacturer's specified values and sequence using a torque wrench.
  7. Final Assembly & Testing: Reconnect all components, hoses, and electrical connections. Once assembled, start the engine and carefully check for any water or exhaust leaks around the gasket seam.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if my powerhead base gasket is failing?

Signs of a failed powerhead base gasket include water contamination in the cylinders, engine overheating, a noticeable loss of power or compression, or visible water and/or exhaust leaks between the powerhead and the adapter housing.

Does this gasket require sealant during installation?

This gasket is designed to be installed dry. Applying sealant is generally not recommended as it can interfere with proper sealing. However, always refer to your outboard's specific service manual for the definitive procedure.

What is the difference between Johnson/Evinrude part numbers 326468 and 351018?

Part number 351018 is the latest official part number that supersedes older versions like 326468, 321510, and 315852. They are functionally identical, and this aftermarket part is a direct replacement for all of them.

Will this gasket fit my specific engine model if it's not listed?

If your exact engine model or year is not listed in the compatibility table, do not assume fitment. This part is designed for the specific models shown. Purchasing for an unlisted model is at your own risk.

What is the difference between OEM and this aftermarket part?

This listing is for a high-quality aftermarket replacement, not an OEM part. It is engineered to meet or exceed OEM specifications using comparable materials and is manufactured in an ISO 9001 certified facility to ensure consistent quality and performance.

How fast is shipping?

We ship worldwide, with most orders arriving within 5–15 days via standard shipping. Expedited options may be available at checkout depending on your location. Standard shipping is free for most destinations.

What is the warranty and return policy?

This part is covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal marine use. If you encounter an issue, please contact our support team with your order details. Returns of unused items in their original condition are accepted within our standard return window.

Safety & Important Info

  • Verify images and specifications against your original part before purchasing. If anything differs—even if your model appears on the compatibility list—do not order.
  • This is an aftermarket replacement component, not an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part.
  • Professional installation is strongly recommended for safety, proper function, and to prevent engine damage.
