Product Details

This complete Transom Seal Service Kit provides all the necessary components to repair and reseal the transom assembly on compatible Volvo Penta and OMC stern drives. It is designed for Volvo Penta SX and DP series drives manufactured from 1986 to the present, as well as OMC Cobra stern drives produced between 1986 and 1993 (excluding cone clutch models). Proper replacement prevents seawater from entering the vessel and corroding critical drive components.

The kit serves as a direct replacement for multiple OEM and aftermarket part numbers, including Volvo Penta 3854127, 22197130, and 3850426; OMC 914036 and 911826; and Sierra 18-2772-1.

  • Engineered with marine-grade neoprene rubber bellows to meet or exceed original equipment specifications.
  • Features a clamp-on design for a secure, direct-fit installation on the transom housing.
  • Prevents common issues like water intrusion, gimbal bearing failure, and corrosion of the U-joint assembly.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this kit fits my specific boat?

This kit's compatibility is based on the stern drive unit, not the boat hull. Verify that you have a Volvo Penta SX/DP series drive (1986–Present) or an OMC Cobra drive without a cone clutch (1986–1993). If you are unsure, cross-reference the part numbers on your existing bellows with those listed in our Part Number Matrix.

What are the signs of a failing transom seal or bellows?

The most common sign is water inside the boat at the transom area. You may also find water inside the U-joint bellows upon inspection, hear a grinding or roaring noise from a failed gimbal bearing, or find water mixed in with your drive lubricant.

How often should I replace my transom bellows?

For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to replace all transom bellows every 3-5 years, especially for boats stored in the water. They should be inspected for cracks, brittleness, or tears at least once per season.

Are special tools required for this installation?

Yes. A gimbal bearing puller (slide hammer type) and a bearing installation tool are essential for replacing the gimbal bearing correctly. A bellows expander tool can also make fitting the U-joint bellow much easier. We highly recommend professional installation if you do not have these tools.

Do I need to apply sealant to the bellows?

Yes, it is best practice to apply a marine-grade bellows adhesive to the channels on the transom and bell housing where the bellows seat. This ensures a watertight seal and helps hold the bellows in place.

What happens if a bellows fails?

A failed U-joint or shift cable bellow will allow water to enter the drive, quickly destroying the gimbal bearing, U-joints, and potentially causing catastrophic damage to the outdrive and transom. A failed exhaust bellow can allow water to enter the engine. Immediate replacement is critical.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). It is built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Our parts are manufactured in an ISO 9002 certified facility and are batch-inspected for quality and consistency.
