Product Details

This VRO Fuel Pump Conversion - Fits Johnson/Evinrude 90-250HP Outboards (Replaces 5007420, 5007422) is a non-oiling replacement kit for Johnson/Evinrude 90-250HP, 2-Stroke, V4, and V6 outboards (90° cylinder block) manufactured between 1984–1996. It is engineered to bypass the original Variable Ratio Oiling (VRO) system, requiring the use of premixed fuel for engine lubrication.

This assembly serves as a direct cross-reference for Johnson/Evinrude part numbers 5007420 and 5007422, as well as OMC 4-7359, EMP 1399-07359, and corresponding Volvo Penta equivalents.

  • Designed for a direct, OEM-style fit and connection.
  • Requires a 50:1 gasoline-to-oil premix for engine lubrication.
  • Reliably bypasses the failure-prone factory VRO system.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 x VRO Fuel Pump Conversion Assembly (5007422)

Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and relieve any fuel system pressure before beginning.
  2. Label and disconnect the original fuel lines and electrical connectors from the old VRO pump.
  3. Carefully remove the mounting bolts and take out the old pump assembly.
  4. Mount the new VRO conversion pump in the same location, securing it with the original hardware.
  5. Connect the main fuel inlet and the outlet line to the carburetors.
  6. Cap off or remove the oil inlet line and the oil-pulse line from the crankcase, as they are no longer used. Disconnect and remove the VRO pump's electrical harness.
  7. Henceforth, you must only use a 50:1 fuel/oil premix in your main fuel tank. The oil injection system is now permanently disabled.
  8. Prime the fuel system according to your engine's service manual before starting.
  9. Once started, carefully check for any fuel leaks around the pump and fittings.
  10. Professional installation is highly recommended to ensure safety and proper function.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

What does "non-oiling" mean for this conversion pump?

This pump is a "non-oiling" assembly, which means it does not mix oil with fuel. The original VRO (Variable Ratio Oiling) system on your engine is completely bypassed. You must use fuel premixed with oil at a 50:1 ratio for proper engine lubrication.

Is this pump a direct fit for my engine?

Yes, this is an OEM-style direct replacement for the part numbers listed. It is designed to fit Johnson/Evinrude 90-250HP V4 and V6 engines (90° block) from 1984–1996. Please verify the part numbers and model chart to ensure it matches your specific application.

What are signs of a failing VRO pump?

Common symptoms include the engine surging or bogging down, difficulty starting, stalling at idle, excessive smoke, or visible fuel/oil leaks from the pump housing. An alarm horn may also sound on equipped models.

Do I need other modifications for installation?

No permanent modifications to the engine are required. However, you must securely cap the oil inlet port and disconnect the VRO electrical harness. It is essential that you switch to using 50:1 premixed fuel in your tank.

Why should I convert from a VRO system?

Many owners convert to a standard fuel pump to eliminate a common point of failure. A failed VRO system can lead to incorrect oiling and catastrophic engine damage. This conversion simplifies the fuel system and gives you direct control over the fuel-to-oil mixture.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?
