- Disconnect the negative battery cable for safety.
- Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gearcase oil drain/fill screw to empty the old oil.
- Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's midsection and carefully lower it.
- Unbolt and remove the water pump housing cover to expose the old impeller. Note the direction of the blades before removal.
- Pull the old impeller off the driveshaft, being sure to remove the drive key as well.
- Clean and inspect the pump housing, face plate, and seals for wear, scoring, or damage. Replace any worn components.
- Lightly lubricate the interior of the pump housing with marine grease.
- Slide the new drive key into its slot on the driveshaft and install the new impeller, rotating the driveshaft clockwise to help seat the blades correctly.
