Installation Notes
- Disconnect the battery to prevent accidental starting.
- Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gearcase oil drain/fill screws to drain the lubricant.
- Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine. Carefully separate the unit.
- Unbolt and remove the water pump housing cover to expose the old impeller.
- Note the rotational direction of the old impeller blades before removing it. Pull the old impeller off the driveshaft, removing the key if present.
- Clean and inspect the water pump housing and wear plate for scoring, warping, or damage. Replace if necessary.
- Lightly lubricate the new impeller and insert the key into the driveshaft. Slide the new impeller onto the shaft.
- Install the water pump housing, rotating the driveshaft in its normal direction of operation to bend the blades correctly.
- Reassemble the pump housing, ensuring all seals and gaskets are correctly seated. Torque bolts to manufacturer specifications.
- Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are properly aligned.
- Refill the lower unit with fresh gear oil.
- Once fully assembled, test the engine in a suitable water source to confirm proper cooling system operation.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I find the right impeller for my engine?
First, check the compatibility tables on this page against your engine's make, model, year, and horsepower. Second, use the Part Number Matrix to see if your existing part number is listed as an interchange. Finally, visually compare our photos to your old part before ordering.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common signs include the engine running hotter than normal, a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, and in severe cases, an engine overheat alarm. The impeller blades can become brittle, stiff, or cracked over time, reducing their ability to pump water.
How often should I replace the impeller?
As a preventative maintenance measure, most engine manufacturers recommend replacing the water pump impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. This interval can be shorter if you frequently operate in sandy, silty, or saltwater environments.
Can I reuse my old water pump housing?
You should always inspect the water pump housing and wear plate for deep scratches, grooves, warping, or signs of melting. If any significant wear is present, the housing should be replaced. A worn housing will not seal properly against the new impeller, resulting in poor performance.
My engine is overheating, but the impeller is new. What else should I check?
If a new impeller doesn't solve overheating, check for other blockages in the cooling system. This can include clogged intake screens, a blocked "tell-tale" outlet, a stuck thermostat, or debris trapped within the engine's water passages.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
