Installation Notes

Proper installation is critical for engine safety. A service manual for your specific engine model is highly recommended.

1. Disconnect the spark plug leads and shift the outboard into neutral.
2. Remove the lower unit (gearcase) from the engine's driveshaft housing. Typically this involves removing 4-6 bolts.
3. Place the lower unit on a workbench and locate the water pump housing, which is usually held on by four bolts.
4. Remove the bolts and slide the water pump housing up the driveshaft.
5. Note the rotational direction of the old impeller's blades before removing it. Remove the old impeller and the woodruff key from the driveshaft.
6. Clean any debris or corrosion from the inside of the pump housing and the base plate.
7. Install the new woodruff key, apply a light coat of marine grease or soapy water to the new impeller and housing interior.
8. Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, ensuring it engages with the key.
9. While pushing the pump housing down over the impeller, turn the driveshaft clockwise to correctly flex the impeller blades.
10. Secure the housing with its bolts, reinstall the lower unit, and test the engine in water to confirm a strong and steady stream from the tell-tale outlet.
