Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and shift the outboard into neutral.
  2. Remove the lower unit (gearcase) by unbolting it from the engine's midsection. Be prepared for it to be heavy.
  3. Place the lower unit on a workbench. Locate and remove the bolts securing the water pump housing.
  4. Lift the housing to expose the old impeller. You may need to gently pry it up.
  5. Remove the old impeller, gasket, and wear plate. Note the orientation of the impeller blades as you remove it.
  6. Clean the housing and mating surfaces thoroughly, removing any old gasket material or debris.
  7. Install the new gasket, wear plate, and drive key onto the driveshaft.
  8. Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, turning the shaft clockwise to bend the blades in the correct direction as you push it into the housing.
  9. Apply a light coat of marine grease or soap to the inside of the pump cup and install it over the impeller.
  10. Re-install the water pump housing bolts and torque them to the manufacturer's specification.
  11. Re-install the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube align correctly.
  12. Once assembled, test the engine using a water supply (flushing muffs) to confirm proper water flow from the tell-tale outlet.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this impeller kit will fit my specific motor?

The best way to confirm fitment is to check the tables in the "Engine & Model Compatibility" section. This kit primarily fits Johnson/Evinrude 40-55 HP 2-stroke outboards from 1986–1989. For full confidence, match your engine's model number and year against the list, or match your existing part number to one in our Part Number Matrix.

What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?

Common signs include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, steam from the exhaust, or a melted/deformed water pump housing. A brittle, cracked, or worn impeller can no longer pump water effectively and should be replaced immediately.

How often should I replace my outboard's impeller?

As a general maintenance rule, it is recommended to replace your water pump impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. For boats used in saltwater or sandy/silty conditions, annual replacement is strongly advised to prevent premature failure.

What is the difference between the black and white drive keys included in the kit?

The kit includes two drive keys to accommodate slight variations in driveshaft keyway designs across different models and years. Both keys perform the same function of locking the impeller to the driveshaft. Compare them to your original key and use the one that provides the most secure fit.

My engine model is not listed but the horsepower and year seem to match. Will it fit?

While the kit may fit other models, we can only guarantee compatibility for the specific engine models listed. Different sub-models can have unique lower unit designs. We recommend checking your OEM part number against our Part Number Matrix or consulting a service manual to be certain.

Is this kit a complete water pump rebuild kit?

This is a comprehensive impeller service kit that includes the impeller and the necessary seals, gaskets, and keys for a standard replacement. It does not include the water pump housing, base, or wear plate. If your housing is scored, warped, or melted, it should be replaced separately.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.

Shipping speed & cost?

We ship worldwide quickly—typical transit 5–15 days. Standard shipping is free; expedited options appear at checkout where available.

Warranty & returns?

Covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If issues arise, contact support with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard window (unused & in original condition). See our policy page or reach out for instructions.
