Installation Notes
- Disconnect the spark plug wires and shift the engine into neutral.
- Remove the lower unit (gearcase) from the outboard motor. This typically involves unbolting it from the midsection.
- Unscrew the bolts securing the water pump housing cover.
- Slide the housing off and remove the old impeller, wear plate, gaskets, and seals. Note their orientation.
- Clean the mating surfaces of the housing and lower unit thoroughly, removing any old gasket material or corrosion.
- Install the new wear plate and gaskets from the kit. Apply a thin layer of marine grease.
- Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, turning the shaft clockwise to bend the vanes correctly. Insert the key if required.
- Lubricate the inside of the new pump housing/cup and reinstall it over the impeller.
- Secure the housing with the new bolts and O-rings provided, tightening them to the manufacturer's specified torque.
- Reinstall the lower unit onto the outboard, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube are correctly aligned.
- Reconnect spark plug wires and test the engine in water, confirming a steady stream of water from the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this kit will fit my engine?
The surest way is to match your engine's model and year to the ranges in the "Engine & Model Compatibility" table. Also, verify your existing OEM part number against the "Part Number Matrix." Do not purchase if your model falls into the exclusion list (Suzuki/Tohatsu rebrands).
What are common signs of a bad water pump impeller?
The most common sign is engine overheating at idle or low speeds. Other indicators include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, a high temperature alarm, or the engine going into "limp mode."
How often should a water pump impeller be replaced?
As a preventative maintenance item, most manufacturers recommend replacing the impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. This interval can be shorter if you frequently operate in sandy, silty, or saltwater environments.
Why buy a full kit instead of just the impeller?
The housing, cup, wear plate, and seals also wear out over time. A worn housing or plate can reduce pumping efficiency even with a new impeller. This complete kit ensures all critical components are replaced for a full and lasting repair.
Does this kit fit newer Johnson 4-stroke motors?
No. It is crucial to note this kit does NOT fit Johnson engines made by Suzuki (2002–2007) or Bombardier-branded 4-stroke motors, which were made by Tohatsu. Please verify your engine's original manufacturer before ordering.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
