Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and ensure the engine is completely cool before starting.
  2. Remove the lower unit (gearcase) from the outboard motor.
  3. Locate and unbolt the water pump housing, typically held by four bolts.
  4. Carefully remove the old housing, impeller, wear plate, gaskets, and seals, noting their orientation.
  5. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly, removing any old gasket material or corrosion.
  6. Install the new gaskets, seals, impeller key, and then the impeller into the new housing.
  7. Slide the new water pump assembly onto the driveshaft. Turn the driveshaft clockwise to help seat the impeller fins correctly.
  8. Secure the housing with the original bolts and tighten them to the manufacturer's specified torque.
  9. Reinstall the lower unit, making sure the driveshaft and water tube align properly.
  10. Reconnect the battery and test the engine in a suitable water source, confirming a strong water stream from the tell-tale port.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if my water pump impeller needs replacing?

Common signs include a weak or non-existent water stream from the engine's "tell-tale" outlet, frequent engine overheating alarms, or a melted and deformed old impeller upon inspection. As a preventative measure, we recommend replacement every 1-2 years or 100-200 operating hours.

Will this kit fit my specific model if the year isn't listed?

This kit is designed for broad compatibility based on the part number. The single best way to ensure fitment is to match your existing part number to the ones listed in our Part Number Matrix, or to confirm the OEM part number specified for your engine's serial number range.

What is the most common cause of premature impeller failure?

Running the engine out of water ("running dry"), even for a few seconds, can instantly destroy the rubber impeller. Other common causes include sucking up sand or debris and simple wear and tear from age and hours of use.

Is it necessary to install the included housing?

While you can sometimes replace just the impeller, it is highly recommended to replace the entire assembly, including the housing and wear plate. Grooves and scoring on old housings reduce pumping efficiency and can quickly damage a brand new impeller, leading to repeat failure.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). It is built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials, and manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility with batch inspections for consistency.
