Installation Notes

  1. Critical Fitment Check: Before disassembly, confirm this kit is correct. Mercury used two different driveshaft diameters for these HP ranges. This kit is for the smaller .438-inch impeller inner diameter. Do not proceed if your old impeller has a larger opening.
  2. Disconnect the spark plug leads to prevent accidental starting. Shift the outboard into neutral.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the upper leg. Carefully lower the unit, watching for the shift shaft linkage.
  4. Place the lower unit on a workbench. Unbolt and remove the water pump housing.
  5. Remove the old impeller, wear plate, gaskets, and seals. Note their orientation.
  6. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly, removing any old gasket material or corrosion.
  7. Install the new wear plate, gaskets, and o-rings included in the kit.
  8. Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft, ensuring the Woodruff key is in place. You may use a small amount of dish soap to lubricate the housing interior.
  9. Rotate the driveshaft clockwise while pushing the pump housing down over the impeller to correctly set the blades.
  10. Secure the housing with its bolts, tightening to the manufacturer's recommended torque.
  11. Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring the water tube, driveshaft splines, and shift shaft are correctly aligned.
  12. Once reassembled, test the engine using a water supply (flushing muffs or in a test tank) and check for a strong stream of water from the tell-tale outlet.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this impeller is the right size?

The most important dimension is the impeller's inside diameter (I.D.), which must match your driveshaft. This kit is for the smaller .438" (11.1 mm) I.D. shaft. Some Mercury/Mariner models in this horsepower range used a larger .456" I.D. impeller. You must measure your old part or driveshaft to confirm fitment before purchasing.

What are signs of a failing water pump impeller?

Common signs include a weak or no water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, or a noticeable decrease in engine performance. The rubber impeller can become brittle, cracked, or worn over time, reducing its ability to pump water.

How often should I replace my impeller?

For preventative maintenance, it's recommended to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years, or every 100-200 hours of use, depending on operating conditions (e.g., saltwater vs. freshwater, sandy/silty water).

Can I reuse my old wear plate or gaskets?

It is strongly recommended to replace all components included in the kit. The wear plate and housing create a seal with the impeller. A worn or grooved plate will significantly reduce pump efficiency, even with a new impeller.

Why are there different serial number ranges?

Manufacturers often make small changes during a production run. For these outboards, the serial number can indicate changes in parts like the driveshaft. That's why it is critical to cross-reference by both model, year, and serial number to ensure you are buying the correct kit.

Is this part OEM or aftermarket?

This is an aftermarket replacement part, not an OEM component. It is built to meet or exceed OEM specifications using comparable materials and manufactured in an ISO 9002 certified facility. Each batch is inspected for quality and consistency.

What are the shipping speed and cost?

We ship worldwide, with typical transit times of 5–15 days for standard delivery. Standard shipping is free to most locations. Expedited shipping options and costs, if available for your region, will be presented at checkout.

What is the warranty and return policy?

This product is covered by a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal marine use. If you encounter an issue, please contact our support team with your order number. Returns are accepted within our standard window for items that are unused and in their original packaging. Please see our full policy page or contact us for instructions.
