Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and shift the outboard into neutral.
  2. Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gear oil drain/fill screws to empty the oil.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the upper housing. There may be a hidden bolt under the trim tab anode.
  4. Carefully lower and separate the lower unit from the engine.
  5. Unbolt and remove the old water pump housing to access the impeller.
  6. Remove the old impeller, key, and gaskets. Thoroughly clean all mating surfaces.
  7. Install the new lower gasket, impeller key, and then the new impeller. Rotate the driveshaft clockwise while pushing down to seat the blades correctly.
  8. Install the new upper gasket and re-install the water pump housing, tightening bolts to the manufacturer's torque specification.
  9. Re-install the lower unit, ensuring the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube align correctly.
  10. Refill the lower unit with fresh gear oil from the bottom up until it flows from the top vent hole. Re-install both screws.
  11. Reconnect the battery, start the engine using a water source (flushing muffs), and verify a strong water stream from the tell-tale outlet.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I find my engine's serial number to confirm fitment?

Your engine's serial number is typically located on a tag on the transom bracket or on the engine block itself. Compare this number to the ranges listed in the compatibility table to ensure this kit is the correct fit for your outboard.

What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?

Common symptoms include the engine overheating at idle or low speeds, a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" cooling outlet, and in some cases, a high temperature alarm if your engine is equipped with one.

How often should I replace my impeller?

As a preventative maintenance item, it is recommended to replace the impeller every 1 to 2 years, or every 100-200 hours of operation. Frequency should be increased if you operate in sandy, silty, or saltwater conditions.

Why does the new impeller seem difficult to install in the housing?

New impellers are designed for a tight fit. To install, place the new key on the driveshaft, align the impeller, and rotate the driveshaft clockwise while gently pushing the impeller down into the housing. This will correctly bend the vanes in the direction of rotation.

Is this impeller suitable for both saltwater and freshwater use?

Yes. The impeller is made from durable neoprene rubber with a corrosion-resistant metal alloy hub, making it suitable for operation in both saltwater and freshwater environments.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
