Installation Notes
- Disconnect the boat's battery and close the engine's water inlet seacock.
- Locate and access the sea water pump housing.
- Remove the screws securing the pump cover and carefully detach the cover plate.
- Before removal, note the rotational direction of the existing impeller's blades.
- Use impeller pullers or two flat-head screwdrivers to carefully pry out the old impeller.
- Thoroughly clean the interior surfaces of the pump housing and the cover plate, removing any old gasket material or debris.
- Lightly lubricate the new impeller and the inside of the housing with marine grease or liquid soap to prevent damage on first startup.
- Install the new impeller by pushing it into the housing while turning it in the direction of engine rotation to correctly bend the blades.
- Place the new O-ring in its groove on the pump body or cover.
- Re-install the cover plate and tighten the screws in a star pattern to ensure an even seal.
- Open the seacock, reconnect the battery, and start the engine. Immediately check the pump for any leaks and confirm water is flowing through the exhaust.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this impeller fits my MerCruiser engine?
This kit is specifically for MerCruiser V6 and V8 engines (4.3L-8.2L) from 2000 onwards that use a brass sea water pump. The best way to confirm fitment is to cross-reference your existing part number with the OEM numbers (47-862232A2 or 47-8M0104229) listed here, and check your specific model against our compatibility table.
What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?
Common symptoms include the engine overheating, especially at idle or low speeds; a noticeably weak stream of water from the exhaust outlet; and, upon inspection, visible cracks, tears, or missing blades on the old impeller.
How often should I replace the impeller?
As a crucial part of preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the impeller annually. For optimal reliability, replace it every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of engine operation, whichever comes first. Usage in saltwater or silty/sandy conditions may require more frequent replacement.
Is it necessary to lubricate the new impeller during installation?
Yes, lubrication is critical. Lightly coating the inside of the pump housing and the new impeller with a water-resistant marine grease or simple dish soap helps prevent the rubber from tearing during the initial dry start-up before water circulates.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
