Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting work.
  2. Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gear oil drain and vent plugs to empty the gearcase.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the engine's midsection and carefully lower it.
  4. Unscrew the bolts holding the water pump housing cover and lift it off.
  5. Take note of the old impeller's vane direction before removing it, along with the gaskets and wear plate.
  6. Thoroughly clean the housing and all mating surfaces, removing any old gasket material or debris.
  7. Install the new plate, gasket, and impeller from the kit. Lightly grease the impeller and ensure vanes are oriented correctly (typically clockwise).

  9. Carefully guide the lower unit back into place, ensuring the driveshaft, water tube, and shift rod align. Secure with bolts.
  10. Refill the lower unit with the recommended marine gear lubricant until it flows from the upper vent hole.
  11. Reinstall the vent and drain plugs, reconnect the battery, and test the engine in water, confirming a steady stream from the cooling system tell-tale.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this kit fits my specific engine?

First, review the "Engine & Model Compatibility" table to check if your model and year are listed. Second, use the "Part Number Matrix" to see if your current part number is listed as a direct replacement or cross-reference. If you're still unsure, compare photos to your existing part before purchasing.

What are the signs of a worn or failing water pump impeller?

The most common symptom is engine overheating, often triggered by an alarm. You may also notice a weak, intermittent, or completely absent stream of water from the tell-tale outlet on the side of your engine. Reduced water pressure can quickly lead to severe engine damage.

How often should I replace my outboard's impeller?

For preventative maintenance, it's a best practice to inspect the impeller annually and replace it every 1 to 2 years (or 100-200 hours of use), regardless of its appearance. Impellers can become brittle and lose flexibility over time, even with low hours.

Is this a difficult part to install?

Installation requires removing the lower unit (gearcase), which demands a moderate level of mechanical skill and proper tools. If you are not familiar with this procedure, we strongly recommend seeking a qualified marine mechanic to ensure it is done correctly.

What is the difference between all the part numbers this kit replaces?

The various OEM part numbers (e.g., 17400-87E04, 17400-87E03) are often supersessions, where the manufacturer updated the part over time. This aftermarket kit is designed to be a functional replacement for all listed interchange numbers.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
