Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and shift the outboard into neutral.
  2. Remove the lower unit (gearcase) by unbolting it from the engine's midsection. You may need to disconnect the speedometer tube and shift linkage.
  3. Place the lower unit on a workbench and remove the bolts securing the water pump housing cover.
  4. Slide the housing up and off the driveshaft, exposing the impeller.
  5. Remove the old impeller, Woodruff key, wear plate, insert cup, and gaskets. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly.
  6. Install the new components from the kit in reverse order. Lightly grease the new impeller and insert cup interior.
  7. Ensure the impeller blades are oriented correctly (in the direction of driveshaft rotation).
  8. Torque the housing bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
  9. Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring all linkages are connected correctly.
  10. Start the engine in a water-filled test tank or with a water flusher attached and confirm a steady stream of water from the tell-tale port.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How often should I replace my water pump impeller?

For optimal reliability, we recommend replacing the impeller and gaskets every 100-200 operating hours or annually, whichever comes first. This interval can be shorter in saltwater or high-sediment environments.

What are the signs of a failing water pump?

Common symptoms include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" port, engine overheating alarms, and reduced engine performance. Visible damage to the old impeller, like cracked or missing blades, confirms failure.

The compatibility chart says "1995 & Up." How do I confirm it fits my specific model year?

The "and Up" designation means this part fits all models produced from that year forward within that series. This kit is designed for the specified Yamaha 40-60 HP range from 1995 to the latest models, as the OEM part number has not changed for this assembly.

What is the difference between this full kit and just replacing the impeller?

This is a complete repair kit. Over time, the wear plate, insert cup, and housing can become scored or warped from heat and debris, reducing pumping efficiency even with a new impeller. Replacing all components at once ensures a proper seal and restores the pump to its original performance and longevity.

Can I reuse my old water pump housing or bolts?

While you can sometimes reuse the main housing cover if it is not corroded or warped, this kit includes essential wear items like the insert cup and wear plate. We strongly recommend using the new bolts and washers supplied, as old bolts can stretch or corrode, leading to improper torque and potential leaks.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
