Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and shift the outboard into neutral.
  2. Remove the lower unit (gearcase) by unbolting it from the engine's midsection. Refer to your service manual for bolt locations.
  3. Once the lower unit is detached, unbolt and remove the old water pump housing to access the impeller.
  4. Thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces, removing any old gasket material or sealant residue.
  5. Install the new impeller, making sure to align the key with the driveshaft flat spot. Rotate the driveshaft in the direction of engine operation while sliding the new housing over the impeller.
  6. Install new gaskets and plates as included in the kit.
  7. Torque the water pump housing bolts to the manufacturer's specified value.
  8. Reinstall the lower unit, ensuring the water tube and shift shaft are correctly aligned.
  9. Reconnect the battery and test the engine in water, confirming a steady stream of water from the tell-tale port.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

What are the signs of a failing water pump?

Common symptoms include a weak or intermittent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, and in severe cases, steam from the exhaust. It's critical to address these signs immediately to prevent engine damage.

How often should I replace my outboard's water pump impeller?

As a general rule, replace the water pump impeller and gaskets every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Usage in saltwater or silty/sandy conditions may require more frequent service.

Is this kit difficult to install?

The installation is straightforward for those with mechanical experience and the correct tools. It requires removing the lower unit. If you are not comfortable performing this task, we strongly recommend professional installation.

Can I just replace the impeller instead of the whole kit?

While possible, it is highly recommended to replace the entire kit. The housing, wear plate, and gaskets are also wear items. Replacing only the impeller can lead to a premature failure if other components are worn.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
