- Disconnect the battery and remove the engine cover.
- Place the outboard in neutral and remove the lower unit (gearcase) by unbolting it from the engine's midsection.
- Unbolt and carefully lift the old water pump housing off the driveshaft.
- Remove the old impeller, wear plate, gaskets, and seals. Note the orientation of the impeller vanes.
- Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces on the gearcase and inside the housing.
- Install the new gasket, wear plate, and impeller key on the driveshaft.
- Slide the new impeller onto the driveshaft while turning the shaft clockwise to bend the vanes correctly.
- Install the new housing, cartridge, and seals. Tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
- Apply marine grease to the driveshaft splines and reinstall the lower unit.
- Reconnect the battery, start the engine in a test tank or with a water source, and verify a steady stream of water from the tell-tale port.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I know if this kit fits my motor?
The best way is to check the part number on your existing water pump housing or in your service manual. Cross-reference that number with our Part Number Matrix. Additionally, review the Engine & Model Compatibility table to confirm your specific engine model and year are listed.
What are the signs of a bad water pump impeller?
Common symptoms include a weak or nonexistent water stream from the engine's tell-tale (pee hole), engine overheating alarms, and in severe cases, steam from the exhaust. Reduced engine performance can also occur as the ECU limits RPM to prevent damage.
How often should I replace my water pump impeller?
For preventative maintenance, it's recommended to replace the impeller every 1-2 years or every 100-200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. This interval can be shorter if you frequently operate in sandy, silty, or saltwater conditions.
Is there a difference in quality between this and the OEM part?
This is a high-quality aftermarket part built to meet or exceed original equipment specifications. It is manufactured using comparable materials in an ISO9002-certified facility to ensure performance and longevity. The primary difference is price and branding.
My 70 HP model isn't listed, will this kit fit?
While this kit is rated for some 70 HP models and cross-references an OEM part used on them, we do not have a detailed compatibility list for specific 70 HP model strings. We strongly recommend verifying the part numbers from your engine's service manual before purchasing for a 70 HP application.
OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). Built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility, batch-inspected for consistency.
