Troubleshooting & FAQ
How do I confirm this seal fits my engine?
First, check if your engine is a Johnson/Evinrude between 50-125 HP made from 1978 onwards. The best method is to match an existing part number from your old seal or service manual to the equivalents in our Part Number Matrix (e.g., 321466, Sierra 18-2059). Verifying the dimensions in the Technical Specs section against your old part is also a reliable check.
What are the signs of a failing propeller shaft seal?
The most common sign is "milky" or creamy-looking gear lube, which indicates water has mixed with the oil. You may also notice gear oil leaking from the propeller shaft area. Performing regular gear lube checks helps catch seal failure early.
What does the "double-lip design" do?
A double-lip seal offers superior protection. The inner lip is designed to keep the gear oil inside the lower unit, while the outer lip acts as a barrier to prevent water and debris from getting in. This dual-action design significantly improves reliability and longevity.
How often do these seals need to be replaced?
There is no specific service interval. The seals should be replaced whenever the gearcase is serviced for other reasons or immediately if you detect water in the gear lube. It's good practice to inspect them annually during winterization or pre-season prep.
Is a special tool required for installation?
While not mandatory, a dedicated seal puller and a proper seal driver (or a socket of the exact same outer diameter) are highly recommended. These tools make the job much easier and significantly reduce the risk of damaging the new seal or the carrier housing during installation.
