Installation Notes

  1. Disconnect the battery and remove the engine cover.
  2. Place a drain pan under the lower unit and remove the gearcase oil drain screw to empty the lower unit oil.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit (gearcase) to the upper engine housing.
  4. Carefully lower and separate the gearcase from the driveshaft housing.
  5. Locate and unbolt the water pump housing cover to access the impeller.
  6. Remove the old impeller, noting the rotational direction of the blades. Use a light lubricant for easier removal.
  7. Clean the housing and inspect it for wear, scoring, or corrosion. Replace the housing if damaged.
  8. Install the new impeller into the housing, rotating it in the correct direction to seat the blades properly. Apply a thin coat of marine grease to the housing interior.
  9. Reinstall the water pump housing and gasket, ensuring bolts are torqued to manufacturer specifications.
  10. Reassemble the lower unit to the engine, refilling the gearcase oil, and reconnect the battery.
  11. Start the engine in a water supply (using flushing muffs or in the water) and verify a steady stream of water from the tell-tale outlet.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I know if this impeller fits my specific Honda outboard model?

This impeller fits a wide range of Honda BF20, BF25, and BF30 models. The most reliable method for confirming fitment is to match your existing part number to one of the cross-reference numbers listed in the Part Number Matrix. If you cannot find a part number, use the Engine Compatibility table to match your engine's model, horsepower, and year. When in doubt, compare the listed dimensions with your old part before installing.

What are the signs of a failing water pump impeller?

Common symptoms of a worn or damaged impeller include a weak or non-existent water stream from the "tell-tale" outlet, engine overheating alarms, and reduced engine performance. Visually, a bad impeller may have cracked, brittle, or missing blades.

How often should I replace my impeller?

For preventative maintenance, it is recommended to inspect your water pump impeller annually and replace it every 1-2 years, or every 100-200 hours of operation, depending on usage conditions. More frequent replacement may be necessary if you operate in sandy, silty, or saltwater environments.

Can this impeller cause my engine to overheat if installed incorrectly?

Yes. Proper installation is critical. If the impeller blades are bent in the wrong direction during installation, or if the keyway is not correctly aligned with the driveshaft, the pump will not circulate water effectively, leading to rapid engine overheating and potential damage.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?

This listing is an aftermarket replacement (not OEM). It is built to OEM-level specifications with comparable materials. Our parts are manufactured in an ISO 9002 facility and are batch-inspected for quality and consistency.
